Hello everyone,

I've been clicking about trying to find some good answers for this one, but I figured it was easier to just sign-up and ask specifics instead.

My new house has a very old combi boiler, on its last legs (heating pump isn't really working, and other nasties). Knew this when I moved in, anyway.

Have had a couple of quotes to replace it by the very same (Gas Safe) Engineer that tested it before I decided to purchase the place. I'm fairly sure he's not trying to sell me a lemon, but I'm new to this so I'm after a second opinion on whether I should plump up a bit more for something "better".

("Better" could just be a brand with a better reputation, I'd add...)

The options:

  • Ideal Logic+ 30, £1450 fitted (7yr warranty)
  • Worcester Bosch Greenstar Compact 32CDi, £1800 fitted (5yr warranty)

The WB has a slightly better DHR (13l/min, vs. 12l/min), but (as best I can tell) the Ideal seems to do some automatic scaling of the CH power, whereas the WB does not.

Is it worth spending another £350 on the WB? I might not be in the house over 5 years, so I'm not convinced the additional warranty is hugely important. Yet I'm also aware that if I do stay beyond the warranty period, the extra spent on the WB might well be made back on cheaper parts (it has been suggested that the Ideal parts are marked-up to cover the cheaper boiler!)

Your experiences & opinions on the operation, cost of maintenance, and indeed the reliability of these units, are all very, very much appreciated.

Go for the logic Tom, i fit alot of worcester bosch,s but mostly the CDi Classics, i also fit alot of logic plus,s and they are cracking boilers, it may be worth while looking into Ideal have there new vogue which has a ten year warranty, but are slightly dearer, just something else to the mix,

Logic everytime mate. Never been sold on WB and they are always a pain to repair

Boiler are like printers.

When I went and bought my last printer, I went to the ink aisle and looked at the cost of replacement cartridges, and then made my decision.

When we get new boilers offered to us I always ask the rep to bring out a spare parts cost sheet.
It's better to know what the upkeep costs are if the boiler turns out to be a lemon.
The reason for this is that we only get a 12 month warranty from some suppliers and 24 month warranty of other suppliers.

I would have the CDi Classic combi rather than the compact, not taken with the compacts at all. Fitted and repaired more classic than I've had hot dinners and they are decent.

I've never fitted a Logic and repaired only around a dozen, so its hard to compare.

If you don't think you'll be around much I'd just go for the Logic. I've only ever had to replace flow switches for the hot water.

Thank you to everyone that commented, and/or voted in the poll. I think we have a clear preference here, and it certainly helps me to have garnered a broader opinion. I shall certainly be back again, when I'm pondering other heating paraphernalia. :)

(Though, as an Engineer of various Computer items, I feel I should warn you against likening inkjet printers to boilers; buying inkjet printers is nowt but a con!!)

Many thanks,

Tom
