Has anyone had much experience with electric boilers? I am working on a project converting an old office block into flats and the layout is making gas runs quite difficult. So I am after opinions on using an electric boiler to heat a wet central heating system with rads and also an indirect unvented cylinder. Has anyone done this? This biggest boilers seem to be around 12kw, so whats the reheat times on the cylinders like etc?

unless you have 3 phase i wouldnt bother and use tracpipe and make a central duct (with other services etc elec and water

If theres gas avalible find a route. Others may shed a different light on it but ive always found electric to not really cut the mustard.

But if you were getting and unvented to run off an electric boiler why not just get a direct cylinder ? Simplify it ?

What amperage is each flat going to have on their supply?

Ive done an electric combi. Elnur gabbaron cmx15.

Also done a 9kw amptec with direct unvented.

Both have their pros and cons.

Preferred the amptec, but its not a year old and already heatrae have been out to it. Needed a new board.

An electric combi wont be possible as most flats are going to have a main bathroom an ensuite so a combi wont really cut it.

I am not too sure on electric supply etc yet. Just want to get some first hand knowledge off guys who have done it so we can weigh up the options and see which will work out the most cost effective way of doing while not hampering the design of the system.

No point using electricity to heat water to pump around rads on a new install. I did some flats last summer.
They used a pressurised direct water heater 170 litre and electric programmable heaters in each room ( they looked like radiators)
The tenants say their electric bill is not too bad

The new generation of electric 'radiators' don't look too bad. Be interesting to see a cost comparison somewhere.

Fitted quite a few electric boilers...easy and good working especially 3 phase ones
BUT would use gas if poss as cheaper to run.
Can you not have central boiler and fit heat interface units at each flat?
Fitted a good few in old folks homes work well.
Saves on multiple boilers ;)
