Are combi boilers regarded as unvented and do you need your unvented ticket to work on them? Cheers.

No. Some larger storage combis. But no one in their right Mind works on them!

G3 is qualified to work on uvented tanks and gassafe registered folks work on combi boilers,

I thought if the stored water was more than 5 litres then it was classed as unvented, or have i just said a load of crap there :)

yea that's what I understand, anything that stores more than 5 litres and is unvented you need your g3.

Or some of the bigger floor standin have storage

U still need the nescassary governed body registration of fuel being burnt to work on said appliance even though u have g3

G3 applies to a vessel with more than 15l

15 l or more is classed as g3 regs

Im sure that anything below 15l of unvented water doesnt come under g3 regs and can be fitted by someone without a g3 qualification.

Anything 15 litre and under can be installed by non g3 engineers, but you still have to follow the g3 regs. If that makes sense :)

Yea that is right, not 5 like I also said.
Just have your g3 and stick to it and can't go wrong then!

Aye, Kris is right 15l is the cut off mark. Presumably a 15l bomb makes significantly less damage than a 16l one?
;)

No it's the 17l with the oil line attached that causes issues. Think 15l was to avoid the under Sink bombs

Nice one.

I was with a plumber today and he was talking to a prospective customer on the phone. He said something along the lines of 'I have my unvented ticket so I can work on combi boilers'.

I didn't get a chance to ask him what on earth he was talking about.

Dear oh dear, there is a major miss-understanding on what is required to install or work on hot water appliances & systems, perhaps it may be different north of the border or you lot have not done your Re-ACS yet.

As of the April 2010 ALL hot water systems fall under the Building Reg's Part G (not just G3) that includes vented & un-vented, storage or instantaneous.

I think some of the confusion comes from the fact that unvented systems under 15 Litres storage are not required to be notified to BCB so long as all the manufacturers required safety devices / controls have be installed.

Perhaps a read through schedule 2B page 9

Also the lack of understanding that an unvented cyl is constantly under pressure fm the mains making it inherently more lethal compared to a heating system with a set amount of water in it that is technically not meant to be connected to mains pressure all the time, not withstanding those daft idea stored water combis designed to ruin your back!!

Does my thermos come under part g? I've fitted a temp relief just in case which discharges into a larger flask, it's a buga to carry tho.

Yes they do but the question is g3? Thought the course was called unvented hot water systems and not g3 ??

I think some folks are gettin a bit confused . It was straight forward .

So my combi has an integral unvented water store of 45ltrs.

Does that mean it needs a G3 ticket to work on it?

No an axe will suffice.

I would have initially said no a few years ago but I would now say yes as technically it's pressurised water heater with a capacity above 15l.
