Recently our toilet pan is starting to make gurgling and bubbling noises after flushing. When first flushed the water level seems to be initially high before becoming quite low in the u-bend as it completes the cycle. It then starts to gurgle as though it is filling up to the required level in the u-bend. Does this suggest a blockage in the main exterior drain?

I always use a plunger.
Its called master plunger and they are less than a tenner from poofix

Get your stepladder out first and tap the soil pipe as it co.es throught the wall from the bog. You can tell if its empty or full. If its full then the blockage is in the pipe and needs rodding. If its empty then the blockage is in the toilet and it can be plungered

Hi lanky just beware if you use the drain rods with the rubber plunger to plunge the toilet just remember not to be to rough because of the metal screw on the end of it, 9 out of ten times you'l clear it good luck,

I use a old cotton mop. Stick it in the pan and plunge away clears most small blockages. Obviously you can't stick a mop down the stack tho :')

Rods did the trick. Drain now unblocked. Many thanks to all

The old type mop works a treat as a plunger alright. Just make sure ye have a bucket or bag to put it in. Ye don't want that dripping a the way down the stairs!!
blockGe could be in the manhole before it goes out the main sewer. It's worth a look.
