Just replaced a new boiler. when the heating is on I can always hear banging or knocking noise from the radiator and sounds like machine gun. never happen with the old boiler. someone said that it's the radiator valve that's causing the problem & need replacing. just incase I'd waste money if that's not true can someone give suggestion for diagnoses.

Thanks

Re: Just installed a new boiler, there are banging or knocking noise from the radiato

Have you contacted the installer or did you fit the boiler yourself?

Re: Just installed a new boiler, there are banging or knocking noise from the radiato

thanks for reply not a plumber myself. someone qualified fitted that for me and that's what he says. I had a feeling that it's not about the valve plus the valve were only fitted 3 yrs ago still considered pretty new. cheers

Re: Just installed a new boiler, there are banging or knocking noise from the radiato

Has it been doing it since the boiler was fitted or has it only just started

Re: Just installed a new boiler, there are banging or knocking noise from the radiato

If you shut the thermostatic valve head down does it stop?

Re: Just installed a new boiler, there are banging or knocking noise from the radiato

since it's fitted.

Re: Just installed a new boiler, there are banging or knocking noise from the radiato

yes! it stops after I adjust the thermostatic valve (up or down). but after a while it comes up again. So I had to repeat it through each individual ones located upstair/downstair like playing a whac-a-mole game.

Also I notice that turning the hot tap on will stop the sound as well.

any clues?

Re: Just installed a new boiler, there are banging or knocking noise from the radiato

I haven't try shutting the thermostatic valve down completely though

Re: Just installed a new boiler, there are banging or knocking noise from the radiato

Flow is going through the wrong way... Maybe the plumber swopped flow & return...

Bi-directional trv should solve it

thanks it's helpful. do you mean the plumber swop the in/out water pipe somehow?. or it's the new boiler that makes the difference. have to replace all valva to Bi-directional trv? thanks

Re: Just installed a new boiler, there are banging or knocking noise from the radiato

the TRV should be bi directional if it is not then the TRV will ned changing not the pipes. it stops when you run hot water because it is a combi and the pumps is now doing the hot water not the heating.

Re: Just installed a new boiler, there are banging or knocking noise from the radiato

could be air trapped in the system

Re: Just installed a new boiler, there are banging or knocking noise from the radiato

Thanks for replies above does it make sense to swop the water pipe to keep the existing trv?

Re: Just installed a new boiler, there are banging or knocking noise from the radiato

No, the others might start banging

Re: Just installed a new boiler, there are banging or knocking noise from the radiato

have a look on the side of the TRV on the problem rad, if it has a single arrow indication flow on the side of it, thats the direction that the water should be flowing in.
check the temperature of the 2 pipes going to the rad, if the TRV pipe is a lower temp than the other one, change the TRV on that rad to a Bi directional.

Re: Just installed a new boiler, there are banging or knocking noise from the radiato

Sounds like combi boiler and installer has swapped flow and return around,,trv is now juddering with reverse flow

Re: Just installed a new boiler, there are banging or knocking noise from the radiato

ohh really. currently all rads are banging. that's what the installer suggest. though worth having a go.
