Hi there, I'm in the process of installing a toilet. All was going well until I noticed a small leak from the rubber bung where the pipe goes into the pan. Searching the problem on Youtube one guy reckons that in general it is often due to the pipe being to small so I disassembled to see if that was the problem. Well the flush pipe provided with my cistern is 50mm going down to 40mm and this means I can't push it any any further than the first shoulder in the pan and so the rubber seal has to be right at the end of the pipe. No way will it go into the smaller orifice and beyond.

Is this in any way normal or must I buy an appropriate pipe or will a good dose of Plumber's mate permanently solve the problem.

Many thanks in advance...............................Kev

Welcome to the forum Kev, is the rubber cone still soft-ish and clean? Really prefer the pipe to be beyond the rubber cone a little bit but plumbers mait will help if you are certain the leak isn`t starting at the cistern end and running down the pipe.

The rubber bung is brand new and came with the cistern. I've recently measured the pipe that fits the pan and it is actually 42mm in the diameter and so there is no way it will go past the first shoulder in the hole so I'm stuck with having the bung right at the end of the pipe. To go past the first shoulder it needs to be 38mm. First time I've fitted a toilet system and when i purchased the parts I was assuming they may have sorted out compatabilty by now. The 50 to 40ish pipe is apparently some European concoction and to me is a good reason 'Out' in the forthcoming referendum...Lol!

you bought it from wickes?

throw the bung away and go to a proper merchant and get one from there. ask them if they do the flange type ones that fit over the spiggot (yours may not have a protruding spiggot though) so just get the rubber type standard.
cost about a fiver, job done....next!
come in various flavours like this.......
