MDPE for external hot water supply?

Hi Guys

I have a customer who wants me to plumb in a hot water supply to her shed. Can it be done? It will be about a 3 metre pipe run, under large paving slabs. Has anyone had experience with this kind of thing? Can it be run in blue MDPE? (I guess I'll need some frost tape and lagging etc.)

Any ideas?

Would'nt have thought so, but need more info. Why not just install a 3KW electric handwash?

Hi There are plastic pipes designed to take hot water. One method i have used in the past is simply a length of 150 mm plastic drain pipe with the water pipe though it. held in the centre by insulation and sealed at the ends with waterproof tape. Dig trench knock holes in walls, install and back fill.

It's all very well supplying hot water to a shed but why? And where is the wast water going to?

i wouldnt want a hot water pipe leaving my house ! if i was the neighbour i know where id be getting my water to clean the car !

Hmm! You can of course, but you would need to lag it and sleeve it and its probably best to use pex double barrier pipe. Also the frost level is the same or probably deeper for hot water than cold which is about a minimum of 750mm deep. Treat it like a water main and add a bit.

Bit of a heavy mauling job for a hot water supply, digging up floors and remaking if you go the buried route. Surface mounting I would expect it to freeze really, but you could wire trace heat and insulate it well. Go on a pipe insulation site, and put the stats in to see how thick they reckon the insulation should be. Also consider how to water proof it. Speck on the lowest temp for the area in the last 40 years.

you can get pb pipe already sleved and lagged but its not cheap as 25m is the smallest rol

Justlead1 system seems like a good one and as Bernie says do not skimp on the depth if possible
What,s the customer doing ,sticking the teenage kids in the shed,seems like a good idea to me
Would not bother giving mine hot water though,maybe a bucket with an arrow to the outside tap and instructions how to turn it on using the least energy

Think i would be asking customer what its for, and also advising that if she didnt use the draw off often she would have to do weekly flushing, as effectivly it would be a deadleg
