Can you leave an old oil stove/boiler in after I have disconnected the heating from it?

If so what do I have to do to it?

drain the boiler completely, remove any pipe connections and leave them open. should be ok, some old rayburns with boilers are left and the owners fill the boiler up with sand to insulate them a bit better, never done that myself.
