Hi I have a simple question that has been playing on my mind - I plan to have a cold water cistern in attic and a indirect vented cylinder supplying hot water - Is it better to supply cold water taps / toilets etc direct from mains and supply cold water to boiler from cistern in attic or supply everything from cold water cistern in attic.

- (I will have a Well for water supply - being cautious and plan to have large approx 40 gallon cistern in attic) other info dormer bungalow 3 toilets 2 bathrooms

Thanks

40 gallons isn't a lot of water for 3 toilets and 2 bathrooms, I installed a cold water storage tank for a 1 bedroom flat 1 bathroom 50 gallons. I would split it, so that you could have 2 toilets mains and supply 1 bathroom with stored cold water.

I think your going to have to give us a bit more information, what sort of showers are you having, power showers will increase your capacity dramatically, distance to stored (tank) cold water, pressure coming in, is all your water coming from the well.

Hope this helps a little

Hi secret squirrel haha thanks for your response - I shall look into increasing tank size - Im involved in new build and trying to figure out pipes - All my water will come from Well - Not sure what pressure it will be yet. Its a symetrical bungalow 14m by 9.3m hall divides beds and living area / kitchen. Water supply all central with cylinder upstairs also central plus two beds will be added upstairs Dormer one on each side bathroom in middle next to cylinder.

I shall also look into splitting the cold water supply - Any more pointers/tips appreciated.

Is there a kind of plastic pipe better to be placed under concrete im looking at large manifold for rads in utility and smaller manifolds for bathrooms

Cheers

you are going to need min 100 gal tank,if mixers on bath and basins you should take cold supply from cwsc in loft, also to wcs because if wter supply interupted you will still have water to flush wcs and can allways boil water from cwsc to use for human consumption, all these houses where every thing of main once main gone off you can flush wc once then you are out of water all round

I slightly disagree with David, in my house I've got 1 toilet on mains and the other 2 on the cwst, if I work on the tank, I've still got the ability to flush and use the mains in the kitchen and utility room. If I have to turn the mains off, I can use the stored cold water.

Before you start putting in tanks etc, you need to have a good idea where the services are going to run, Eg. distance from cwst to the toilet etc, you will not have much pressure in a bungalow this may lead to other problems,

Personally, I'd have a good idea where everything needs to go and then get some professional help. You may need count elbows and bends that are going to be in the system as these are all restrictions. Its much easier to get it right first time than trying to make it work after

why not go the whole hog 1 wc on mains ,1 on cwsc,1 on grey water harvesting unit,my point was a lot of my custermers here in kent where over the last few years we have had the mains turned off a lot is most of them have had cobi boilers fitted and when main goes off cant flush wc ,not to bad for young people but older people dont like this

Is there a kind of plastic pipe better to be placed under concrete

refer to paragraph 7 of schedule 2 in water supply (water fittings) regulations 1999.

1) no water fitting shall be embeded in any wall or solid floor.

placing any kind of pipe in floor screeds to be cememted is not permitted. pipes in these positions need to protected from the corrosive effects of the cememt and they need to have room to expand and contract. you should lay your pipes in accessable ducts.

Hi thanks all for replies - A plumber should be poping over this evening with a quote and a breakdown for first and second fixtures - I shall see what (fingers crossed) is on the list perhaps ask you all some additonal questions before deciding what step to take next - Thanks again for your time
