I walked out in to my hallway earlier and noticed that the toilet was making a loud noise despite not having been flushed since the morning. On closer inspection, I found that water was pouring down into the bowl. I lifted up the cistern and the valve instantly shot out due to the high water pressure. Water spurted up over the top of the cistern. I've now stopped water from getting to the toilet.
What could be causing this? The water pressure to the rest of the outlets in the house seems normal.

Some toilet inlet valves come with a fitting that has to be inserted according to if its a low or a high pressure system. Installer may have not fitted it or good old limescale has just killed off the valve over time. Usually a straight forward job to swap in a new one. I always fit fluid masters where I can.

Ok - Ive found the one you mean and Will buy it to see if it fixes the problem. Thanks.

might of not been clamped right (the grey ring not fully pressed down)
