When my (semi detached) neighbour turns off her tap (mains I think), I get a loud bang in my house. Is this a water hammer? What is causing it? How can I stop it?

Any help on this would be much appreciated.

Martin

water hammer is very diificult to diagnose, especially online.
i always suggest an expansion vessel next to incoming stop tap to help.15 litres normally does it.
remember its a solution to a problem, dosnt fix the problem

Hi Is unusual if you have separate supply pipes from main in road. However it could be a joint supply. My advise would be to investigate further as to the type of supply. Then ask the question again based on findings. Good luck

Thanks for those very prompt replies.

I don't think we share a mains supply. How can I tell? I have my own stopcock and there is a small watercompany cover on the pavement outside my house. I suppose if I can open it and turn off whatever is inside I could see if both supplies stop.

I only hear this loud bang 7 or 8 times a day - but she must use the water more than that. Is there anything else in the plumbing that could cause this apart from a water hammer?

Hi. Shutting of the supply very quickly at a tap or solenoid valve on w/machine are common causes, some taps are quarter turn which halt flow immediately and cause the shock wave. Which is water hammer, The air vessel mentioned in other post, when installed acts as a buffer. Good Luck

the best solution for water hammer an old but wise plumber showed me was to solder a tee instead of an elbow to the cold water tank con with an upstand of about 8 inches with a cap on it,the air is compressed against the cap and acts as a cushion saved my butt a few times now worth a go before buying water hammer devices
