Hi all, very new to plumbing so please forgive my stupidity. I switched off both central heating and water yesterday for a full drain down to fit a bath, wc and basin. Switched the water back on in the eveing and all seemed ok (checked and there was water coming out of both hot and cold taps). I got a phone call from the customer about 2 hours later saying that the hot water had stopped coming out of the taps!

He often gets airlocks in the kitchen tap so tried to push it back through but that didn't help. I noticed that the gateway valve to the cilinder it broke, it just constantly turns without anything happening.

My guess is that the gateway valve has snapped and that the gland is still on locking the water off. Does tis sound right, or hav you any other suggestions? Also, if it is an airlock and forcing it back though the kitchen tap (what he normally does) doesn't work, what then?

Many thanks!

Its quite common for the gate spindle to snap on old gate valves.

If the cylinder cold feed gate valve is close he won't get hot water or be able to blow the air back into the cylinder cold supply tank/cistern.

that is why i dont usually shut off gate valves and just drain the whole lot, unless your brave and can change it live, gona have to somehow get all the water out of the storage tank. Probably a mouth full of water

first, i would check in the cwst if there is a blockage/ polystyrene in the feed pipe.
then check the passability of the cold feed past the gate valve by blowing the water back up to the expansion pipe,
old house old system yes?.
then fk. of home when its running again.
