Mrs Tara Plumbi

Mr TP went to see an Ideal boiler that was not working the other day (we have done a tonne of work for this old lady over many years).
He didn't know what was wrong, nothing obvious so he told her to call Manufacturer as it was within 2 year warranty.

Engineer came, called Mr TP on phone and said badly installed - flue wasn't connected and customer could have died! BS!
Mr TP installed it, another Ideal engineer has been to a problem some time ago and the boiler has been serviced by Mr TP.
Without doubt that flue was connected.

End of call - when Mr TP attended the property later he found the flue was now completely disconnected.
BUT no ID notice on the boiler, Mrs Old Lady or anyone could have gone and turned it on, it was not disconnected.

Mr TP measured the flue and reconnected it - all fitted together perfectly as it always had - but now the "horse shoe" clip that secures the flue to the boiler is missing - the engineer must have taken it with him when he disconnected the flue.

All we know is that this isn't either of the usual ideal engineers that we know from this area
and
Mr TP has fitted a few of these cheap boilers so he is certain it was all correctly connected (it has been inspected a couple of times since installation)
and the this engineer left it in a dangerous condition.

BTW it now works, we don't know why, we don't know what the engineer did apart from disconnect the flue.

Would you complain?
And why would he have done that?

Manu engineers can be a PITA, having problems with a glowworm one at the mo. Wont do warranty work because its a lowara pump and hes not seen one before so its not suitable for the system!

Im thinking of complaining to the manu aswell

Most certainly complain, and threaten to report him to gassafe.

You've the advantage of having had one of their guys out to it previously who can corroborate your complaint.

Riddor the nob. Probably the same gang who left this keston on

I had a logic AR because inlet was 18.mb he obviously had t seen the addendum regarding pressure drop over gas cock! But they leave a clearly dangerous appliance in service.

Unfortunately Mr TP didn't take a photo, and even if he did I guess the manufacturers engineer could claim he found it like that

But I am amazed that the manufacturers engineers leave appliances in dangerous working condition, I always assumed they would DEFINITely be good guys.

I would because there is a chance someone else may have reported a similar thing and it had been dis regarded as a one off. Principal more then anything nothing may happen from it but if you have concerns it's only right someone is notified.

Ps. On a completely unrelated subject, I stumbled across your office yesterday

Forgot to tell you that Mr TP thought the engineer sounded strange cos he started off by pointing out that the CO detector was out of date (by one month) and he'd only been there a few minutes but already had a headache.
But
it had been NOT working for a few days and it is installed in a garage and if the flue wasn't connected it would have been spilling CO for a long time - the Co alarm would have been activated.
All very strange.

Ahh i think i saw you at plumb centre at aylesford tara the other day :)

complain and ask to talk to the area manager and get him to come out with said engineer and give both barrels.

sounds like a jobsworth!

we did with a viessmann engineer.

null and voided warranty as no auto bypass installed

had his area manager and him out as im pointing at the 54mm low loss header below the boiler!!

Hes working for raven-heat now

Unit j8 was on the sign post Tara plumbing?
Does it still say that?
We left there in 2004 shortly after moving to our current home.
Mears had it for a while and then they moved out.
Now someone else has it.

Not me - i rarely leave Thanet

But it could have been Mr T P. he gets around!

We both drive vans with the biggest loudest sign writing saying Tara Plumbing so you will know it's us.
There is another Tara Plumbing though - over in Slough area and run by a couple with the same first names as us - by scary coincidence.

re the duff engineer, I'd report the issue to gas safe anyhow and to ideal. Could be just another subbie working for £45 a callout that he couldnt fix, to save being called back for no fee, he gave it a fault. Engineer working for a manufacturer round here is also one Ive reported to gas safe as he cant do a safe install? beggars belief.

I wouldn't the ideal rep round here is hopeless at best!

He has lost more customers down this way then the logic + won them

Had this a couple if times with our local heateam crew. Cost me six decent customers. Complained to the md of heateam, which got me nowhere. Wont fit any baxi group product now!!!!

i had the heat team bloke phone me up to find out what was wrong with the boiler i had fitted it the day before and gas valve was duff from the box

I had a installed a promax fsb. There was a problem with it breaking down intermittently. Their engineer came out and assured me that it was the PCB. Changed that and called to site a number of times after changing different parts. They ended up giving me a new boiler and paid my labour to fit it.
whatever about the engineer potterton fair play to them put their hands up and did the decent thing.
Wouldnt say that happens too often.

Heat team are bricks. Don't even know their own products spec.
Been paid to remove "nuisance" boilers

Not good for a manufacturer engineer to practice like that, do you know if was a subbie or a genuine ideal guy?

I have had issues with heateam before trying to blame a dirty system for a blocked heat exchanger when infact the diverter was knackered, took ages to get it sorted. I have also had a complete idiot of a vaillant engineer call me up to ask whats wrong with the boiler. The gas valve was passing and I had left a note on the boiler saying this. He called up saying the gas valve was fine as there was only a 0.5mb drop when the appliance was reconnected and 0mb with the boiler disconnected. It was a u16 meter and 0mb is allowed as the customer was reporting smell of gas from the flue outside. I had to persude him for over 5 mins to actually replace it as he was convinced there was nothing wrong with it. I even explained to him how to do a "mini tightness test" to test the gas valve was closing.
