Hi folks, got a question. How far above a gas hob do cupboards have to be? My cupboards get quite warm underneath! Anyone?

My understanding is that there should be a minimum of 760mm of clear space directly above the hob. The units should be a minimum of 460mm above the hob and 50mm short of each side of the hob i.e if the hob is 600mm then the space between the units should be at least 700mm.

Check the hobs manual if you still have it, I’ve seen some say as low as 630mm clearance above.
Thankyou all. I know what it should be, just surprised it gets signed off every year on the cp12, when cupboard units are 43 cms above the worktop.

Yes I have it, it's a new gas hob.

The allowed clearance is a minimum of 750mm above the burners and a minumun of 50mm of side clearance from the burner. Unless manufacturers instructions state otherwise.

It is measured from the burners, not from the actual edge of the hob spill over tray. all the hobs I see & have installed already make the allowance of a min 50mm side clearance from the burner to the edge of the spillover tray so you only need the wall unit directly above the hob to have a min of 750mm clearance above it. If your hob is 595mm wide as most 4 burners are; then a standard 600mm bridging unit above it will satisfy the regs and give you the min 50mm side clearance needed. Hope that clears things up for you & explains why it passes the CP12.

I have never seen a gas hob mi's to state a clearance of less than 750mm, an electric hob yes but not gas.

did one just this morning at 650mm as stated in the MI, plus it says you need to take a look at the extractor MI just in case of conflicting distances. This was a Lamona hob, a favourite with Howdens kitchens
