I was at a property last week doing a job...

The customer asked me whilst I was up in the roof space to drop a Harvey's salt block into his cold water storage tank!!

I was pretty surprised, but he reckons it does the same job of a softener without the expensive machine lol!!! He reckoned it lasts about a week, but when I looked in the tank an hour later it had 3/4 dissolved lol...

I'm no expert on softeners but I thought they used the salt to flush the lime scale hardness from the resin, surely this is just a tankful of very salty water??
