    Central heating pump positioning

Am going to do away with my very old oil fired boiler and get a new one. I have an open vented gravity fed setup. With HW tank and pump in upstairs airing cupboard with the boiler some 20m away from the house in an outbuilding. Got the local heating guys round yesterday to take a look and was...

Leaking bottom inlet on toilet cistern.

Just fitted a new WC and all okay except I cannot get the bottom water inlet to seal. It is a Fluid master setup. It drips from between the cistern base and the plastic nut not between the nut and the thread. It came with a flat washer, have even tried 2 washers, came with a spare in case...

    Direct unvented element

In addition to the problem my daughter has with hot and cold flow rates varying wildly reported in a previous post now the bottom element has expired. Hence she is only heating about 1/3rd of tank at most and then on day rate electricity. Am I being Mr DIYer allowed to drain the tank and fit a...

Useless foam washer on waste outlet

Probably resurrecting an old topic. I am of the opinion that the foam washers supplied with waste outlets are a total waste of time. I read suggestions of forget the washer and use silicon, boss white etc etc. Anybody have a definitive solution. The one I am trying to fix without leaking is a 1...

Low pressure once got water arrives at outlet

Problem is with a directly heated invented cylinder. Turning on a hot water tap alone, does not matter which, there is an excellent flow rate until actual hot water arrives at the tap. Then the pressure drops of considerably. Am I missing something obvious with this setup?

    Water pipes passing along hall.

Attached are 2 photos of what I found in the daughter's hallway when investigating why the passge was " a bit bouncy". Out has come the carpet and she is going to replace it with laminate. I have a few questions one of which is why are there 3 pipes as it only feeds the kitchen sink, could it be...

    WC cistern water inlet

Am trying to fit new WC for daughter. First problem is that the 1/2 inch water inlet hole is a tad too small to fit the fill valve thread. There is a slight lip on the ceramic that needs removing. Tried a half round file gave up with that. Any recommendations as to what to use to remove this...

Bleeding rads on open vented system

On a thread I started recently , cannot find which one, somebody mentioned that bleeding of the rads on an open vented system should be done with the pump off so as to not possibly draw air into the system. Do I read into this then that auto bleed valves are not a good idea on that type of...

    End feed fittings being awkward.

Am sure is not me as I have done end feed fittings before with no problem. What I am experiencing is that after cleaning up the fitting and the pipe they slip into each other fine but after I apply flux they do not. If I try to turn the fitting on the pipe a lot of the time it is very hard...

    Acova steel column radiator

I am wanting to switch the feed from the bottom to the top of the rad. Obviously I will need to switch the bottom and top bushes around. Here is my dilemma are they LH or RH threads. I have tried to undo in both directions and cannot shift it. The bushes are at the opposite end from the bleed...

    Submersible pump.

Was not sure if this is the correct forum but here goes. I have a well, approx 45ft deep, at the bottom of which is a submersible pump. Was originally installed to run a sprinkler system for which it was fine. Now my wife wants to use the water for general garden spraying using a hand held...

Somewhat off topic regarding outside sprinkler pressure.

Having got fed up moving the sprinkler around to try to cover the lawns I decided to push out the boat and get a large all singing and dancing job that looks the part. Problem is water pressure, or more aptly lack off. So I decided to fit a booster pump. I measure the water rate at around 20...

    Drayton Wiser smart system

Am thinking of installing one of these systems. Am undecided regards using the smart TRVs. I like the idea of them being controlled by Google Alexa, if it actually does work well. Does anyone have actual experience of this setup using Google?

    Weir flow cup results

Wanting to ascertain the flow rate from various taps and have seen this Weir flow cup thing. Will that give me different. or more accurate, figures of flow rate than timing a delivery into a marked container? Latter seems an easy obvious solution without resorting to spending £20 on a gizmo.

    Condensing boiler trap

Now I always thought that a condensing boiler needed a condensate trap. Was at the back of mine just now and cannot see any trap. There is a 22mm plastic pipe from an outlet marked "condensing outlet" which goes off into a soakaway. It is a Grant Vortex Utility about 10 yrs old.

    Belfast sink jig angle

Might be off target posting here buy here goes. All the jigs I see to route out the worktop for a Belfast/Butler type sink have an internal radius of 25mm. I find this odd as the internal radius of the one have I removed and the replacement have an internal radius of half this, as do all those I...

    Washing machine hose

Are some washing machine hoses better than others? Will soon be fitting a washing machine and for the sake of a few quid, spent on a better hose, would like to get a reliable one. All you see in Screwfix, Amazon etc look very similar and would assume of same quality. Most are blue, or red, but I...

    Worktop width and waste pipe

Probably been asked before but will ask again. Am fitting out the utility room and having a quandry, if one can have such a thing, as to width of worktop. How do people get away with worktops 600mm deep if they have any sort of pipework going behind without appliances ie washer and dryer...

    Poor valve operation

Is it just me or do others agree that these valves are pretty useless, when needed, ie taking washing machine out, never seem to close fully with resulting drips.
