Strange grating noise when mains water is running

Hi all, Got a strange grating noise when the mains water is running in a property I'm looking after. It's a ground floor flat, with a first floor flat above it, and both share the same mains water pipe, and I believe the stopcock behind the washing machine isolates all water to both properties...

    Nightmare airlock in F&E system

Hi all, Got a nightmare situation with a central heating system I recently adopted. It's an open vent system with a combined F&E pipe, with a Worcester greenstar danesmoor 18/25 oil boiler. Covers 10 radiators mostly large double panels, some towel rails and smaller rads too, as well as an...

    Cold water storage tank setup

Hi all, My mates recently bought a new old house and has had extensive work done including new bathrooms etc. We've got a few questions about the hot and cold water distribution. The house is supplied by cold water at around 3 bar, so decent enough pressure. The way it's set up at the moment...

Atag boiler only cycling on for a short time

Hi, I had an Atag system (heat only) boiler fitted about 3 years ago. It’s model IR24 LPG. It’s worked fine for the first year or so, but on the second winter (last winter) it had a strange problem where it would only cycle on for about 1 minute and then would go off for about 5 minutes, before...

Hi, I've got a small (30 litre I think) plastic header tank in the loft, and its full of brown sludge. It just has a cold water feed into it, an overflow pipe, and one pipe at the bottom, which joins onto the main central heating pipe. There is a heat only boiler, and a megaflo hot water tank...

    8 bar domestic water pressure

Hi I measured my water pressure with a new water pressure test gauge, and got a reading of 8 bar. This was measured after the stopcock, at a dishwasher machine valve. I've looked at normal water pressures in the uk, and it seems that 8 bar is unusually high. This 8 bar pressure is found in the...

Difference between ceramic cartridge and check valve taps

Hi I'm buying a new kitchen mixer tap, and I've found two with the exact same specs, brand and price, other than one having a 'ceramic cartridge' and the other having a 'check valve'. What's the difference between the two, and which would be preferable? Thanks for any replies
