    Gas Leak Detection

So I did a gas safety today and got a 7mb drop on tightness. Capped the meter as both boiler and hob were not the reason. What's the best/quickest method for tracing a leak (other than a sniffer as I don't have one)???

    Heating system refill

I'm at arms with my landlord.. We've had a bad leak for over 2 months now where I've had to refill our system 2-3 times a day. Now, I'm not talking just topping up pressure. The leak was basically an elbow joint that had snapped and would drain the entire system in 3-4 hours. We just had a...

    Waste issue

Was called to a job and found the pipework rose on exit from both p traps. The discharge pipe runs behind the cabinets straight out the wall into a 4 inch stack. There is no option the rerun the pipework behind the cabinets. The insinkerator discharge point is lower than the discharge pipe so...

    Check valves on existing showers

I've got a nasty job tomorrow if fitting check valves on concealed shower valves, 3 of them in one house. I'm thinking the best way about it is to break out 2 rows of tiles underneath the shower valve in a hope I can undo the compression nut on the cold/hot feed and cut into the pipe and fit...

    Private Work

So I've just been to diagnose my first private job, I told the lady that I charge a fallout of £45 but will only charge it if I get the job. She agreed. How does everyone else do call out charges? If you charge a callout but they go with another company do you send them an invoice for just a...

    System pressure / expansion vessel

Quick question, Went to a leak, found it coming from a PRV from an ideal combi boiler. Checked the pressure and it was at 3bar. Someone had left the filling loop open. Released some pressure and tested the heating and within 5 mins the pressure goes to 3.5 bar. Am I looking at either a...

    Heating Issue

Went to a job today. Tenant complaining that the rads were getting hot when the room stat was off. Y plan system fully pumped, old potterton heating only boiler. On investigating I found that the programmer had been wired so it gave a permanent live to the room stat regardless if the heating...

    Unvented Immersion Heaters

Ok, I've posted something about this before but I'm still not sure about it... So.... To test the stat, I put my meter in the two small brass holes next to the neutral wire??? Which set on continuity should be zero when the stat is set to minimum (or temp satisfied) and a reading if set to...

    Wireless Room Stats

Went to a job today reporting of no heating. Heating only boiler with a cylinder for dhw - s plan. After creating demand on the water, confirmed the pump and boiler was fine. After testing I found the wireless receiver to be at fault - I bridged the common to the call and ran the heating, all...

Negative Head Pump on a Positive Head System

Any reason this can't be done? Even if I take off the pressure vessel and cap it off??? The tank is probably less than 1 meter above the shower head so not much pressure to begin with anyway...

    System Upgrade

My brother has just bought his first house and it currently has a conventional gravity system with a standard boiler (old 15 year old gloworm). Mains pressure/flow rate is 3.5bar/14lpm. 2 floors (ground and 1st), 5 rad system. 1 bathroom, 1 toilet, 1 kitchen. I've recommended a combi system...

Boiler Weight - DUMB question alert!!!!

I'm no weakling by all means, but I'm no he-man either. I've started training to build up my strength again (used to train quite a lot a few years ago) to make my life easier when I start fitting boilers for my firm when I get gas safe. I was reading through some boiler manuals (this is for a...
