I had to change a 3/4 inch rad valve today and the tail had 2 grooves instead of a hex key. Is there a specific tool for these tails as I had to borrow another guys makeshift tool to get it out Cheers

Soldering new pipe to old painted pipe

So, The story goes like this: Went to fit a new rad today but plumb centre gave me a double panel instead of a single and because I was in a rush I didn't clock this error. I just stuck it in the van and went to the property. Anyway, drained the system, put on shiny new valves and hung the...

    Toilet Pan Not Clearing Contents

I've had 2 jobs recently where the flush isn't clearing the contents of a toilet pan. Both toilets are lever type siphon's. I was asked to go change the concealed cistern on one of them which didn't rectify the problem. I put a push button siphon in it. I didn't really agree with changing the...

    Tap Removal From Ceramic Basin

I need to remove a tap from a large ceramic (expensive) basin. The backnut has completely corroded and is not budging. I soaked it in penetrating oil and still no go. Room around the backnut is limited. There is a rubber washer in between 2 metal plates that go onto the underside of the tap...

    Shower Pump Install

One of my jobs tomorrow is to install a twin positive head pump for a bath/shower mixer tap. Can it be as simple as cutting the existing pipework to the tap and taking it to the pump and then from the pump to the tap, if I install the pump under the bath? Or do I have to go the route of...

    Experience & Frustration (rant)

Your average apprenticeship is 4 years. I did 6 weeks training, 2 months out shadowing an engineer and now out on my own with the same firm I shadowed. Now I know I'm bloody lucky to be where I am but... I was sent to install a shower the other day, baring in mind I've never installed a shower...

Old & New Bath Taps & Connectors

I went to a job the other day to change a bath mixer tap. It's fed with 22mm copper with what I'm sure were 22mm x 3/4" female iron couplers. Attached to the irons were 3/4" to 1" offset connectors which the tap screws onto. The existing pipe distance is 180mm. The new tap is 150mm. The tap I...

TRV used on both sides of rads???

I went to a property (I should say mansion - 5 floors) and every single rad had a TRV on either side. One side had the stat head and the other was capped off. Isn't this bad practice? How are you going to balance the system with all valves fully open? Shouldn't one be a lockshield?

    Best Course Of Action

Went to a property yesterday as was asked to change a shower valve. It's quite a high end property. I couldn't do the job as no means of isolating the water (property is in a large block of flats). In my head, I would have had to remove the tiles surrounding the valve as there was no access...

    Lead Pipe & Faulty Stopcock

Went to a property today and had to cap off an old lead pipe going to an outside basin. Trouble is, when I turned the water back on by the Stopcock on this picture, packing gland bust and sprayed water. Couldn't undo the gland nut or the body to repair it and the lead pipe it's attached to is...

    Toilet and annoying bad smell

I'm stumped and I could do with some help. Went to a property today which has 3 floors. The property starts on the first floor of a building of 2 flats. There are 2 toilets on the 2nd floor of this property (which is the 3rd floor of the building) which I believe are both tee'd into the same...

Heat on but off on boiler

So I came home the other day to find my rads were hot. Room stat was off. Vaillant ecotec pro combi set to 'on' for heating. This morning I turned the heating off at the boiler and again, I came home to hot rads. Dodgy pcb on the boiler?

    Draining CH system

When draining a central heating system, vented and sealed, is it a no-no to do it when the system is hot? I mean even after the boiler electrics have been isolated so there is no further demand for heat. I've heard someone say they couldn't drain a system as it was hot, but I drained one...

    Kitchen Sink & Basket Strainer

My kitchen sink has a 2" hole for the waste (see pic) but the basket strainer I'm fitting needs a 3 1/4" hole. Cut a bigger hole? Is the inverted 2" hole recessed to enable being cut out? Sorry for a potential idiotic question!!!!!

    In The dog House

So I decided to buy a John Reginald book on combi boilers from Amazon - £23. I was all excited today when I received an email telling me they'd put it through my door, only to find this monstrosity: Bloody dog got a hold of it before I did!!!! I wouldn't mind but for me that's more than a...

    Bathroom Rad valves

I went to a job last week: Bathroom towel rad had 2 lockshields fitted so no user friendly way to control the temperature. I recommended fitting a TRV after turning down the left hand lockshield. I discussed this job with my training engineer and he said you'd normally only fit wheel heads in...

    Pipe Freezing Kit

Anyone used or have any thoughts on this? I'm thinking of buying one: http://m.NoLinkingToThis/p/rothenberger-rofrost-rapid-pipe-freezing-kit/1221f Or I was thinking of the Arctic one which is £50 more expensive but does the same thing in the same way. Cheers
