What are the plastic bits under shower doors called and where do you get new ones?!

This is turning into a nightmare!! There's no point in my customer changing his shower unit as it's lovely but the plastic trim at the bottom is a real mess. I've tried 3 plumbers' merchants so far and they all say get in touch with the manufacturer but we don't have a clue who that is so where...

    Cold water storage cistern overflowing

Hi all, I could use some ideas please - I've been looking at a CWSC that's overflowing but not all the time (which makes me think it's not the ball valve). It appears to happen only when the immersion heater is switched on but the water doesn't come from the vent pipe like I'd expect. The...

Wanted! All central heating problems and solutions you've come across.

Seasons greetings all plumbers!! I'm laid up with a nasty cold (aaah!) and I thought I'd turn my spare time in bed into something useful by trying to learn something useful about central heating and the problems associated with it. There have been some brilliant general hints and tips on this...

Heating not working properly unvented microbore system

Hi all, I'm trying to find out why an unvented microbore system isn't working as it should. The boiler works fine but when I got to it this morning the system pressure was at zero bar. I filled it up to the working pressure, turned on all TRVs and lockshield valves and bled the system fully...

Forgive my lack of experience but...

I've just mended an F&E tank overflow leak for a lovely lady and the reason she needed it doing was because as soon as she switched the heating on, the tank in the loft started filling up from the expansion pipe. Could this just be because the boiler is set at too high a temperature or something...

Shower problems! 65mm between hot & cold feeds

Hi all, Generally I'm used to shower feeds being 150mm apart center to center but I've just been to look at one where they're only 65mm apart. The cold (mains fed) is fine but the hot (cylinder fed) won't turn off when the shower is stopped. Have any of you heard of this before and can anyone...

Anyone know why upstairs rads are hot and downstairs only medium hot?

Evening all. I've been working at a customer's place and she asked me today why her upstairs radiators are really hot but the downstairs ones are only medium hot. I'm not entirely sure myself. The only thing I can think is that it's somehow down to the lack of TRVs on the system. There's a room...

Soil pipe leaking into kitchen sink

Hi all, I was called to a first floor flat last night because water was coming up out of the kitchen sink. It turned out to be from several flats upstairs and for some reason the soil stack had diverted water into the kitchen waste pipe then into the sink and all over the floor. Has anyone...

Can anyone help with radiator balancing please?

Hi all, I have to balance radiators for some friends and whilst I've done plenty of other jobs for them this will be a first time effort! Does anyone have any tips or links to websites that show you what to do? Many thanks!

Leaking soldered joint due to water

Hi all, I'm finishing a job tomorrow but I've had a leak in a pipe that won't solder properly because I can't get all the water out of it. I was thinking about cutting the offending piece out and putting in 2 compression joints instead but I'd like to avoid this if possible. Anyone got a...

How can I sort out an airlock in a customer's heating system?

Usually I back fill the system with water from an outside tap on a drain valve (if the feed & expansion tank isn't doing its job) but the drain valves are useless and let all the water out so now I'm stuck! Does anyone have any simple suggestions as to how to get this airlock out please?
