New DIY "Plumber" needs advise for loft water tank supply nut and olive?!?

Some ball valves come with a tail that has a more or less flat face for to suit a flat fibre washer onto the fitting you have. But some valves tails also come with a tapered more sharp end to them that only strictly speaking suit a brass nut and brass or copper olive. Personally I prefer the nut...

A DIYer saying hello from Cheltenham

Post you problem on the Central Heating section of forum. Any actual gas boiler issues that involve the inside of the boiler casing cannot be answered unfortunately by any of the gas engineers for safety reasons obviously. Edit, - I just read your post re your "overflow" and looks like you might...

    "Cold water dripping from tundish"

In the Central Heating part of forum, Rystar00 I can't believe the cheek of some people! He, or she is polite and gives good detail and photos, but after being told a week or two ago that he needs a G3 plumber, he is back on claiming the G3 plumbers couldn't manage it! So now the OP just wants...

    Gravity cold constantly airlock

I have came across a strange one I can't solve. Have been to a job probably 5 times over many months. This plumbing is original several decades old, without precious bother. The elderly couples toilet and cold bath tap stop flowing from gravity tank fed. First time I went I just quickly cleared...

Glue for s. steel under sink to granite?

Does anyone know what a stainless steel sink that fixes to the bottom of a granite worktop should be glued/sealed with? I have a customer who has his kitchen sink broke away from the granite and only a few metal brackets at sides and rear of sink are holding it. I am hoping to be able to do it...

    Another unvented tangle

I came across this unvented install. Seems the plumbers just do the first fix, any old fix and then later find their pipes are all in the wrong places when they go to finally pipe it all. No drain cock fitted, D1 is maybe 2 metres long, combination valve is low down and at back of unit with a...

Any point in over-speccing BTU vs. what is required? Read more: http://www.diynot.co

Re: Any point in over-speccing BTU vs. what is required? Read more: http://www.diyno No harm in slightly oversizing radiators in my opinion. They should be compatible with a condensing boilers ideal lower potential water flow temperature to rads. But you would still need to have the rads...

Bet you would have to sometimes cut corners on that to get your job finished on time. Might be good advertising for you though when people watching the programme recognise you and think what a decent bloke you must be.

    Moving single skinned oil tank

Was speaking to a customer today and he said his oil tank at his house was going to be moved by a builder. I did the plumbing & heating in the large new build about 9 years ago. Tank is a single skinned (customer did a lot on the cheap). Customer was aware that there are regs about distances to...

    Water stopped flowing from shower

Got a call that customer was anxious to get sorted. The water through their shower valve had suddenly stopped. I got her to send me photos, then did some research to see if parts available. Dreaded going to job today, as I knew it could mean ordering parts and another call. It was about a 15...

    Reason I hate plastic valves

Went to bung water off on a cwt in attic of a modern posh house and discovered water everywhere around tank and ceiling. Fluidmaster plastic tailed side entry valve, (which I then replaced with brass tailed Pro version) was leaking at end of tail. Close inspection shows the plastic has cracked...

Is it legal to disconnect gas bayonet?

Can someone not gas qualified legally turn the gas valve off that solely does a gas cooker range and disconnect at bayonet valve (all brand new) for range to be pulled out for new floor covering to be put down? Or does bayonet fittings require gas safe person to touch them? It is for a friend...

    Joule unvented unit

I have been out tonight to an oil heating system that has stopped working. Boiler is in garage, but a builders plumber has fitted the red expansion & filling loop and a Joule unvented cylinder, all up in the attic and brand new. Went to have a look and can't believe it! All plastic & push fit...

    Soldering for a DIY'er

If you are going ahead with doing some of the piping and soldering yourself, then do loads of practice soldering first. Don't practice on the real thing. When I did my first soldered joint, it was watched over by a professional and I only got to start after I had watched perhaps thousands of...

    Soldering for a DIY'er

Bet the labour cost savings would be insignificant. My thoughts are if someone wants to make their plumbing job as cheap as possible by reducing the amount of hours of labour, then they should do any manual work they are capable of to make things faster for the plumbers, but not do the pipework.

    Soldering for a DIY'er

With a Surefire 2 it would be fun to watch a diyer soldering for the first time. Hot little things, - they don't call them a brazing torch for no reason. It is the torch I use, but took me a while to get used to it when I first bought one and that's after being used to soldering for years with...

    Fume back flow

Can you believe it, - this idiot on the Oil and Solid Fuel section of forum, after posting about serious fumes coming from his oil burner and asking how he would seal it, has a new post! Does he think we won't notice it's him again asking if it's possible to get back draft when boiler not going...
