Leaky flue, can it be DIY or do I need a specialist?

You must have been lucky. All mine taught me was that insulating tape stops the photocell seeing the flame.

Leaky flue, can it be DIY or do I need a specialist?

As it is indoors, you need to be careful. A conventional flue like that will have a "draw" on it & will tend to not leak badly at a little crack in a joint, but what if the boiler has suddenly started to go bad & burn wrong, or if the flue is blocked for any reason? Although a bit of heat resist...

removing emersion heater from hot water cylinder, any tips??

If you can get to the side of the immersion, where it joins to the tank, (easy if it is unfoamed cylinder) then carefully cut between the fibre washer & the old immersion using a junior hacksaw till you hit brass (NOT the cylinder side or you will damage flange face). This will weaken the grip...

Woodburning stove and gravity hot water

As long as the 28mm primaries are very carefully installed to allow gravity flow & you have heat leak, it should be safe. I would like the feed pipe in 22mm. I should add that the pipes should be well protected from freezing, especially in attic.

Solid fuel system with no hot water

Seems to be a gate valve on the 28mm return to stove. Shouldn't be there & has no purpose. The proper injector tee is fitted.

Hot water cylinder, poor flow and cold water to kitchen.

Draw off should have no effect on flow even if it is dropping a little to the vent. The 15 mm pipe is fine for the hot to downstairs & will only cause problems if other supplies are off it & any are turned on at same time as kitchen.

Hot water cylinder, poor flow and cold water to kitchen.

First of all, check the tap in the kitchen isn't blocked slightly with a bit of scale etc from the old work when plumber disturbed it. The tap, if it is a mono bloc it will be easy for dirt to have slowed the flow & the diffuser at the end of the tap neck may be blocked. A bit of foam of the new...

    Indirect 900 x 450 hot water cylinder

Hot pipe from top of cylinder shouldn't be any further than the bottom of the fitting as it is supposed to vent air. No need for any of the connections to go any deeper than a standard brass fitting allows. Why not use a brass fitting to first compress each olive before you fit each pipe to...

    CH system losing water

If the pressure drops, you have loss of water somewhere, slight or otherwise. Microscopic leaks from rad valves or brass joints are common leaks. A PRV will open & close & water will be lost if system pressure too high when boiler heats.

    CH system losing water

You remove air - you create a space for the water to fill, so the water expands loosing some of it's pressure. Simple.

Solid fuel system with no hot water

Agree. Pipe stat should be on return at cylinder as it would be too slow at turning the pump on if it was fitted on return at stove & it could plump up a bit.

    Capping cold water tank off!!

Gives you stored cold water if from a cold tank. Nothing wrong with gravity cold & hot if the taps suit the lower pressure. Just remember the pressure may massively increase to the cold gravity pipework that you are thinking of swapping to mains, so hopefully it is sound.

    Help with radiator output needed

Looking at a 1960s bungalow with converted roofspace that may need some new rads. No idea if what is there is adequate as guy has just bought the place & he wants to put hardwood flooring down in some rooms. Just wanted an approximate second opinion, please, on output of just one room as an...

    Problem getting hot water only

If it is designed for heating hot water separately from the rads, then you really shouldn't be getting hot water when the heating only is on. Sounds like you could have a basic system that heats rads & hot tank together & perhaps incorrectly a timer that has hot water facility. If that is what...

Oil boiler locking out due to air in oil pipe

Wonder has anyone experienced this? An oil boiler I have just been to is locking out because of air in oil pump. The oil tank is 11 metres from boiler house, but the tank base is about 18" ( 450mm ) below level of boiler base. The tank has only enough oil to come to level of boiler base. No...

    Blender turns electric showers on!

This question is really for the experts on electrical forum, but thought I'd mention it here. Today, I looked at a Redring 9.5kw expressions shower that stopped working a few weeks ago. The owner said it sometimes pulses. He surprised me then by saying it does this when his wife uses a hand...
