    Non invasive leak detection

I've been asked to investigate pressure loss in a heating system. Pressure relief valve is ok. Expansion vessel is OK. Boiler heat exchanger is OK, plus it's a new boiler anyway. Cannot see leaks under the floors. But there is one screed floor with one radiator. The pipes are copper in a...

    Potterton boiler recommendation

Hello, have a potterton Promax 30sl, 6 years old and the heat exchanger is leaking. The new boiler, should I avoid potterton altogether? Any good ones to recommend when I get an engineer out? Thanks.

    Pipe Insulation, foam vs cooltherm

I've usually always used that grey foam pipe insulation to insulated heating pipes, but I've been thinking, for domestic work, is it really worth (for the customers gas bill) going for that cooltherm kingspan foil lined pipe insulation that I see on commercial jobs? Thanks.

    Expansion Vessel and water hammer

Good morning, I've just been asked that if someone has a tap which shuts of the water abruptly, such as the cartridge valve taps and water hammer occurs, would fitting a small expansion vessel close to the tap relieve this? To be honest I have no idea but I can find the logic to this question...

Really only need a few metres, if any spare! Cheers.

    Copper pipes and cement mixes

I know that wet cement/concrete can have a reaction with copper and begin to attack it, so we sleeve it, but can dried set concrete still have any affect on copper pipes installed later on?

    Pipes in concrete/screed floor

Hello. I should know this, but haven't done it in a screed before. Have one radiator to connect to an existing system for an extension. The extension has a concrete floor and the pipes to be laid will be buried in screed. What's the best method to adopt? I was intending to use copper and...

    Radiator Pipes in new Extension

Hi there. Been a while, but have a question. I've got one or two radiators to connect in a new extension. There's a small radiator in the existing house where I can break into and continue the circuit through to the extension. Now, the existing house is suspended timber floor. The extension is...

    Leaky bath waste

Afternoon chaps. Righto, had quite a few leaks from my bath as of late, fixed most of them and then traced another puddle to the waste. I've had a good go, but know these can be troublesome from some searching. What I've done is stripped it all apart, cleaned it, re seated the chrome drain...

    New fittings onto old pipe

Today I've put some new 22mm ballofix valves onto some old pipework. They tighten up to what would usually be enough, but if I get a spanner on the fitting, I can still rotate the fitting on the old pipe. I'm aware old pipe appears a touch smaller. I've dressed the olives in V2 paste, but yet...

    Pipe safe insulation

I know certain building matierials mustn't come into contact with copper pipes. Is expanding foam ok to touch pipes? I've a gap between two floors where pipes run within the chimney cavity up to the airing cupboard that I'd like to fill.

    Honeywell CM927

Hi all, I have the CM927 programmable room stat and I'm having a numpty moment! I can't work out how to program it to switch off. It has lots of start periods and the next time is what would usually look to me to be the time off, but it just stays on. Example, I'm used to 'time on' press next...

    Insulating pipes

Is there much call for insulating central heating pipes underneath a downstairs floor? There's not an awful lot of clearance to actually get the grey foam type around the pipe, so if I must, then my options are quite limited.

    Condensate drain.

Condensate drains should have a continuous fall long the entire run, which we know, so why am I seeing some installations where the 3/4" pipe exits the wall level? Of course it won't back up, as it falls after the exit, but that's not falling along the entire run is it.

    Cleaning and dosing new system

I've got a shot of X300 in there that's been in there since last night and been run. As it's in my own home and I've all the time to care for it, are there any advantage in cooking it some more longer or should I be fine to drop it, flush and refill with X100?

    On an expansion vessel.....

....the steel dish where the thread is, when tightening the fitting onto the vessel, is it a problem if the thread and steel dish turns freely (when tightening - otherwise no so freely) on the vessel?

    Dosing a sealed system

Can someone tell me how I would dose a sealed system, what tool I would need? Thanks.

    Expansion vessel

Does it matter if a heating expansion vessel is fitted with charge pressure valve top way round or charge pressure valve bottom way round?

    Sealed system kit

I don't have one handy, but was wondering, as I can't find anything on t' net, if someone has a good photo or instructions they can post as I'm interested in seeing how one is piped up, where everything goes. Thanks.

    Pipe reaming

Does reaming out the pipe after the little burr that the circular pipe slicers leave make much difference to the flow of gas or water? Is it worth doing at all?
