1mb gas leaks are annoying and hard to find..

is their a easy way to find them ? like capping at each appliance and gas meter and filling the pipe with water..(stupid idea) and wrong but would show up the leak, obviously i would never do that and never will..

what about compressed air and smoke ?

i have one of those, but its not too good at pulling tiled floors up and other household stuff out the way before getting to a gaspipe.

im just thinking of another way of finding the leak without pulling a house to bits

how are you going to get all the weater out though after ? if all the appliances are disconnected its got to be on the pipe work . is there a smell oif gas anywhere ?

1st Rule of thumb I use is ask the custard! Can bring grief sometimes but it's there house so they may just be able to point you in the right direction. Next its process of illimination by isolating sections at a time. Can be very labour intensive/time consiming. In the days before HSE and Corgi and the like, the Bryant & May method was quite often used...... I obviously do not suggest anyone use this method as the invention of the sniffer has since made leak detection much less volatile....! :D

try testing the meter on its own then you can eliminate it from the pipework, then you would need to start zoning the pipework and testing seperate parts to try and find the leak.

About 10 years ago, I put a 3" welded gas main in on an old manor house, about 300 yards long with about half of it in a trench wrapped in denso. All done & ready for connecting at each end and gaffer decided to pressure test it..............with water!

We had words!

It can be done with water for strength testing. It is called hydrostatic testing. A somewhat specialised subject mainly on the distribution side.

any water in a gas pipe is the kiss of death for any appliances connected to it half of chingford recently got new appliances when a water main flooded a gas main

how much are they pssst? ive used the mark 2 on the big stuff (mains and commercial stuff) but always used the other guys as i sub to him.

i got a kane sniffer for £55 from plumbfix, has helped me find tiny leaks, it even goes mad when you breathe on it !! :saddam:

May try getting one of those kanes for that price. We use a mk1 gascoseeker and its amazing, over 20 years old and have pin pointed 1 mbar gas leaks with ease with it. Can be had second hand and re-furbished for around £250 but well worth it. In the 8 years I've been using it I can only think of about 2 out of hundreds that I couldnt pinpoint, as accurate right down to even which side of the fitting is leaking.

If i have a small leak I cant find, i turn isloated all appliance and fit a speedfit dry test adapator and pressurise the pipe work upto 3 - 4 bar, that way you can hear the leak. I use a car compression instead of a foot pump as I am lazy LOL.
