I have recently drained the hot water and heating system to replace a radiator. Having flushed the system both HW and CH the only way I get get hot water is to run the central heating. I suspect the valve maybe clogged with the usual black gunge or could there be another explanation?

well if your hot water side of the valve was clogged up ,you would not get hot water at all even with heating

So think something else, does any think work when on hot water only, boiler, pump, could be a loose connection,do you have two valves or y plan, presume everything was ok before flush/rad change

if you get hw with heating on and its a 3 port valve, valve either jammed in mid position or it could be opening for hw and the end/auxillary swithc has failed on the hw side and isnt energising the boiler. so could be a problem with the actuator head, or the valve unit could have failed. Either way looks like a new 3 port valve. But carry out a fault finding check first on your programmer, cistern stat etc.
