I am going to post these on seperate threads as they seem to get better responses if they are seperated

1. what is the allowable drop in your eyes (not legislation)

The reason I ask is because with appliances its 4mb, somewhere else it says no more then 0.25mb and somewhere else it says that meters can have up to 8mb.

so I know the legislation but am wondering what you would allow!!

sorry forgot to mention I am doing college course this week and am learning but the tutor cant give us a straight answer!!

i dont think any one will answer these questions mate you should have your books ???

I'm sure it's all in your book. Off top of my head think new install with no appliances attached no drop allowed?

Jase if you aren't getting the info you need from your tutor mate you must ask them. That's what they are paid for. If they aren't getting the basic facts across to you then they are failing you in my opinion.

yeah this is what I am asking,
would you say 0mb even with appliances connected?
or would you allow a couple mb?
or would you stick to the book recommendations?

Again this isnt the facts, this is the opinion of gas engineers that I am looking for.

to be fair guys hes got over 1600 posts hes not a new comer and were here to help each other , as i said were looking into a training section for trainees and i see no real harm in helping a respected member with a decent input into the forums

You have to stick to the book. Otherwise you'll be someone's special friend in jail :)

your tutor sounds whack mate, I'd ask him to help you and if he doesn't I'd go above his head

Go with what is written in black and white! There are so called "professionals" that have strange interpretations on allowable drops. By all means take advice from fellow GSRs, but for your own sake, check any advice against regs!

Bod's gone soft, Croppie will be along in a bit to shut this thread down. Good cop/bad cop.

Jase are you in college doing gas training or are you now actually doing your core gas safety?

If your in training then your tutor sounds pants it does sound like you need to familiarise yourself more with your book

yes in training doing foundation and yes need to familiarise myself a lot more with book.
he is just going through quickly and is expecting us to do most of the work. we also have 2 months to learn all this so plenty of time

Bad cop my arse............

Go with what's in front of you in black and white Jase. No interpretations.

Funnily enough I had a similar convo this morning with one of our contracts managers.......

I think I need to read up and understand the differences on the different drops for this one, thanks guys

i get where your tutor is coming from...

its the first law in gas.

learn how to find the answers in your gas book!!!
they get even more vague as you proceed through the course.lol

if you try an answer like,, yes i know its 4mb but my mates say 6mb drop is ok...then your out...

yeah there was a few today on a practise test and I thought I knew and when I looked it up I was wrong, so as long as you know how to look it up then you are fine!!

Somewhere in your book there will be a chart of permissible leakage rates depending on what meter is fitted. This is only applicable on existing installations with appliances connected. Also take note that the permissible leakage rate also states if there is no smell of gas. You can bet your bottom dollar if you ask the customer if they can smell gas anywhere they will say yes.
