my heating system comprises of 9 radiators over 2 floors with a woodburning fireplace/boiler.
My question is the pump is a wilo star RS30/7 which has a head of 7 metres.

When the system was installed the pump was set on the 3rd setting but i have now turned it down to the slowest 1st setting. All the radiators warm up well

Now my question is ,
the pump needs replacing as it is noisy do I really need a 7 metre pump the main pipes are 28mm from the boiler on the ground floor to th roof space then branch into 2 x 22mm with each radiator fed off of the 22mm in 15mm

What is the effect if any of a too big a head pump?
sorry for the ramble

With all due respect to you, it sounds like you need to get a Heating Engineer round to look over it and advise you.

I am not a plumber. If you search for Wilo they have a UK site and they sell both parts as well as refurbishing their pumps. Might be worth a call to them with model number and ask how much to refurbish. You might find it better to either repair the pump or have it refurbished. Obviously you still need a suitably skilled person to drain down, remove pump and then install a refurbished/repaired pump then refill the system with appropriate corrosion inhibitor and bleed the system.

As for the head and the speed the heating engineer originally set they probably knew what was required at the time. I assume you turned it down to speed 1 as it was noisy? Some boilers are supposed to be operated with their pump at speed 3. Mine boilers pump is supposed to be operated at no3 as in manual.

Looking at Wilo pumps they do seem to be very good quality.

Alternatively ask on here if there is anyone in your area who could come and give you a quote to replace the pump with a suitable one.
