Sometimes it works and sometimes it don't!

My 5 year old gas fire (serviced every year) has suddenly started to act up. Using the sliding lever at the top, moving it all the way down it fires up the gas - never fails to fire up the gas. However, after counting the recommended 10 seconds and moving the lever upwards to light the main burner, the fire goes out and it will do that for 4 or 5 or more goes and then on the 6th go it will light the main burner. If I do that same thing tomorrow, it will start first time! Even MORE infuriating, the wife tells me it very rarely fails to start first time for her!!!!!!

Any ideas - next service is due in March so don't want to call anybody in if this is something which can be overcome very simply with information from somebody who might have come across one of these in their vast experiences of the past?

Seems to me that your wife has the magic touch, leave her to it!
Seriously tho, there is nothing relating to your problem that a non-GSR can touch.
