The boiler has decided to chuck a wobbly today. If any of you kind people know a bit about boilers and heating systems I'd be grateful for a bit of advice.
It's a Worcester-Bosch Greenstar 30si (gas combi).
It has been working fine up until just before lunch when I turned on the hot tap, the boiler made its usual noises prior to lighting but also there was a lot of gurgling sound from the pipes around the boiler. We had a look and found the heating system pressure was at zero, we went through the process of topping that up (integral filling kit), but the pressure gauge isn't budging (we have looked at the user guide to check we were doing it right) and it's staying at zero, even after leaving the valve open for a few minutes.
We then thought maybe there was an airlock in the radiators somewhere, I don't know whether that would have affected things much but, we bled the radiators anyway. The farthest radiator from the boiler hissed a lot and there was more gurgling in the pipes but even though we kept it open for a good couple of minutes, no water came out.
Would the heating pressure need to be right in order for the boiler to light for just hot water operation?
Why might the system not be filling? I'm hoping the answer isn't "a breach in the system". I have been round and looked for obvious signs of leaking. Can it take a long time to fill a system (more than a few minutes to even register a tiny change in pressure)?
If at all possible we would like to avoid having to get a plumber round as we are both pretty skint at the moment.
Any help gratefully received.
