We have a dilemma on the replacement of our 10 year old combi boiler. Our house has 4 bedrooms with 12 radiators, 2 bathrooms with an ensuite shower room. The existing combi heats to the radiators and hot water to the kitchen. Hot water to the bathrooms is from a tank in the loft and hot water cylinder heated by electric and the ensuite uses an electric shower (which also needs to be replaced).

The option is replacement of the existing combi boiler and the electric shower on a like for like basis. However, we can change the combi with a system boiler with an indirect cylinder for heating and to serve all the bathrooms. The water mains pressure appears OK but there is a cost differential of £2500.

We are not sure if the cost differential is good value for money. Thanks for your help.

Get some more estimates from local plumbs if you a questioning the current price you have.

You can then weigh up which one to go for however in plumbing and heating cheapest does not always mean a good deal , in most cases cheapest is a rush and tear job .

Thanks. I will get more quotes but need to know if system boiler is better than combi?

Assuming you have good flow rates and decent pressure coming in from the water main, then yes, the system boiler + unvented cylinder is a "better" solution, and if you were starting from scratch, that is what I would recommend.

What you have at the moment is a bit of a hot-potch, and it would be nice to tidy it up. Whether its £2500 worth of nice depends on lots of factors - like how much you care about an improved shower experience, would you value getting the tank out of your loft, how much do you value the long term saving on the leccy bill, against the capital investment now?

The difference in price isn't just for the system boiler + cylinder vs the combi. It will be for integrating what at the moment is 3 different systems.
