Hi all
been to gas leak today and can't find it so going to re pipe at customers request, she wants the pipes hidden as possible so my question is can I cut a Chanel in the plasterboard wall and put it in there then patch it up. Would this be ok to do if I put some tape on the pipe to prevent corrosion, and is it ok with it being hidden behind the plasterboard? It will run horizontal for about 5 meters. Appreciate any comments. Thanks Martyn.

gas pipe is better on surface but can be wrapped in pvc tape and put onto wall and covered as long as its fully encased in the plaster dab.

There are regs on pipes in voids, channels etc. Get your G1 book out or whatever you use for reference pal

is it a dry lined wall. the pipe needs to be in a purpose built channel or it has to be covered with plaster etc to protect against any damage

The plan was to surface mount it which I'd planned for whilst there but she just rang me up and said she is selling house at some point and a friend advised her that it is best hidden. It's a newish build about ten years and I'm just guessing that the wall is dry lined so was going to cut a channel and fix pipe to block work behind. It's going to be a nightmare, I have had a look in my Bpec book with the pipe in walls section but wanted some info from guys that have done similar. Thanks

I'm sure if you bury it you need ventilation in the wall also.

Or move the appliance closer :)

Exactly as Ant as said, because it is fully encased there is no void, therefore ventilation is not required, if this were not the case every new build for the last 15 years would be cut off!

It's middle house. Town house too, got to pipe boiler on 3rd floor and hob on 1st.

if its on the blockwork it has to be encased in dab or sand and cement. If its into the block it needs 1m galv steel plate over the top.

Its also bad practice to run horizontal tbh.

the pipe would need tape fo protection.

If the plasterboard has been studded or dot and dabbed then there is a void and the pipe must either pass directly through it with a sleeve or if it runs within it,then it must be ducted in some manner so as to prevent escape of gas into the void if there is a leak. I wonder if its possible to channel out the board and fit a length of capping or surface run it in capping? If its a relatively new build, have you checked for nails in wall for hanging stuff incase theyve nail a pipe? If anything looks like its on the pipe run, pull it out and see if it hisses!
