Hi,
I've just purchased a house, and think I need to add in a wireless thermostat to control the upstairs - and I'd like some advice please.
Current setup:
- Worcester 40CDI boiler
- Horstmann h37xl programmer with 3 zones; downstairs UFH (wet), upstairs rads and hot water.
- UFH has wired thermostats to each room.
- Obviously programmer has ON or timed setup for when each of the 3 zones are to be on.
"Problem":
- There is no thermostat upstairs.
- Each rad has a thermostatic value, plus there are some towel rails.
- Therefore the only way that central heating upstairs is controlled is via the programmer's timer settings, plus TSVs deciding to shut off their rad when it is hot enough in the room.
- The problem as I see this is that the pump is constantly on for the whole duration of the programmer's heating slots, even when no heat is needed in each room. Also, the towel rails are constantly on too.
- I've just had to replace the pump, which feels like it might be prematurely wearing out with this approach?
- Feels like I'm going to burning money on this approach, having the central heating on constantly when the programmer is on. What I'm used to is the typical thermostat controlling if heat is needed and the boiler only firing up if this is true.
Does my "problem" make sense, or am I missing something?

- It would seem sensible to install a wireless thermostat to control the upstairs heating, perhaps placing in one of the bedrooms?
- Obviously there are smart systems - Tado, Nest etc., but this gets very expensive quickly with the need to replace all the UFH thermostats, all the TSVs etc.
- So, I just want a simple solution.
I'd like some advice on how a wireless thermostat can be added into the heating system we've got i.e.
- Would I need to replace the h37xl programmer, or can a wireless thermostat be integrated?
