I am unfamiliar with the way this radiator is plumbed with the flow and return pipes on one side only of the radiator. Is this an acceptable set up?

TBSE (top bottom same end) is fine. As above does it get equally hot throughout the length of the radiator? If not, them possibly have a diverter tube made up. There are correction factors for different radiator flow and return connections, however in your case its a straight 1, meaning no adjustments needed making on sizing the radiator for the liad.
