Whats the expected life of a HWSC? mine was commisioned in 1988 and ive been told thats way too old

Copper can last 60 years or more. Its not unusual to see cylinders a lot older than 1988 in my area.

It all depends on where you are really, if your in a hard water area you may be changing cylinders every few years.

So inspect for signs of leaks or white corrosion marks.

Mine was commissioned in 1988 and I can think of no reason to change it. It works fine.

Took out one week before last, salt crystals made up three quarters of the volume, luckily customer there to help(he just moved into a reposession). If your having other work done, such as central heating replacement then I would advise to change it as its economically prudent. If your having nothing done then wait and see. As long as there is no calcifaction round nuts/seems or streaking, then you could be alright for another five years. As mentioned, all dependent on water hardness.

I took one out a few weeks ago that looked OK, was being moved to a new position, drained it out and when I moved the 28 mm cold feed the boss fitting literally fell out of the cylinder, the copper had corroded almost paper thin. Dont know how it hadn't started to leak but if it had let go whlist connected it would have been a big flood, particularly as the house was empty for a few weeks. The label said it was fiited in 1988.

ones i always come accross seem to be worse on the bottom where u cant see it?.
