Hi there guys n gals,
Been asked by a existing customer to do a gas safety check on main water heater and lincat commercial cooker ( 4 rings gas and electric oven) in a fish and chip restaurant. The frying range is at the front of the shop( not sure if electric or gas, if gas it has its own meter at front of premises)) then theres the restaurant eating area in the middle and finally a kitchen with sinks/ freezers/ spud room etc at the rear ( really long old building). Then theres a little room with this lincat cooker and on an external wall a water heater. These two appliances are served by a u6 meter in the ginnel at the rear of the building.
Ive been asked to carry out a gas safety check, first thing thats springs out is no ventilation for combustion for cooker, as room isnt on a external wall with window or door.

can i work on this u6 meter and appliances with a domestic ticket

But you could do the water heater
 
Thanks for the reply Shaun, it's bloody bizarre that! I assume I can work on the pipework and heater, but not touch a poxy 4 ring cooker. I've installed and repaired god knows how many cookers over the years....

Makes me think of doing my commercial now, I'd get lots business without a shadow of a doubt. What's the catering side of things, is that just an area of commercial you specialise in?
 
You need Commercial and Commercial Catering, ( if you're going to work on this).
Ventilation in Commercial Kitchens is a whole different ball game and if you're looking at Chip shop fryers, There's a ticket for that too, (there was last time I checked).

op its going to cost you the best part of 2k plus a week to week and a half off work so theres another 1.5k

so can you pull in 3.5k of servicing work on it ?
 
What's the average cost of a service, is it something that has to be done yearly?

not much your looking 60-150 and yes in theory but how many do
 
have been industrial and commercial for 32 years domestic for 11 years befoe that self employed for 12 years and the amount of commercial work i have accounts for less than 5% of my total work load and these were old customers from who i used to work for (now non existent) it is harder to come by as most companies go for the larger companies as they will be vat registered also have national coverage if they have multiple sites. you will also need to get larger trade insurance i would say minimum 5 million, also experience in dealing with larger appliances and systems also larger gas meters when testing. some more tools your outlay for all of this needs taking into account. you can earn a lot more if you are willing to go into it wholeheartedly. commercial catering is a bit of a minefield as there are so many things you need to know and some appliances like lincat are Rubbish to work on and sometimes it is easier for them just to get a new one. it adds about £1200.00 to my certificates every five years but i steer clear of catering appliances and takeaway shops if you have LPG you can get into mobile caterers, but as someone said they dont get things done every year. so continuity of work is not great. good luck if you go for it as commercial is the side i enjoy most.
