Hi, this is my first post so hi to everyone. Basically I am just looking for some help into a humming/vibrating noise that is coming from water pipe that runs from kitchen up to bathroom. Noise suddenly stated about 3 weeks ago and has gradually got louder, the noise goes away as soon as I turn the main water valve off in the kitchen. I have had a friend who is a plumber look at it a couple of times but he doestnt have much of an idea of what it is. He said it cant be water hammer as there is no leak and also suggested calling the local water authority which I done and they cleared the drains but that made no difference. He still thinks the noise could be coming from outside and vibrating up my water pipe but im not sure. Can anyone help me as I really have no idea what to do next and the noise is driving me mad.

thanks

You say when you turn your main stopcock off, the noise stops? Then it is most likely in your house & probably a fill valve somewhere. A hum noise is usually a fill valve. Take a look with a torch inside the toilet bowls for a trickle of water overflowing down back of bowl & causing fill valve to slightly work. Get your plumber friend to come back & check all the valves again, - or get a second opinion from another plumber. Make sure the mains pipe is not touching plasterboard ceilings etc.
If there was a burst outside your property at road or somewhere in your grounds, you can get a loud water roar, not hum, but this will be a lot less if your stopcock was turned off.
