Discuss Any regs/issues/no-no's for a hot fed outisde tap? in the Plumbers Arms area at Plumbers Forums

Nope but depends what it’s being used for might need extra steps eg backflow

Double check valve is a great idea as would an internal isolating valve which is higher than the outside tap. Winter switch off drain down. We did a few hotels outside back yards like this so the kitchen porter could really cleanse the area properly. The building inspector and council health people were made up. centralheatking

Hose union bib tap (or similar) with a double action check valve should be good.

The taps with in-built check valves are fine for an existing outside tap installation. However the water regs state that on any new outside tap installation, the double check valve must be within the building to reduce the chance of frost damage I assume. It seems that a lot of plumbers don't know this little detail and I'm not saying you didn't know that but just putting this out there for information purposes.

Good Point!

In all honesty, I did think through it for a minute.

I thought about the double action check valve on the inlet to an unvented cylinder and about how the water main is already protected. The additional DACV (double action check valve) in the tap would protect the household in the unlikely event of back siphon-age and thought it would be good enough. I thought about the air break in the vented systems, in a similar manner.

I realize that these things can be damaged by frost if left venerable during cold weather.

I agree, it would be better inside.

Had this with the local merchants, only supply with built in check valves. Told them they're fine for replacing an existing (except for the check valves failing and blocking the tap) but new installs need an internal double check valve. They didn't have a clue.

I import around 90% of my stock from B.E.S. as our local merchants cannot (or will not) get anywhere near them in price. I have always said I understand why they cannot beat B.E.S. on price as the small merchants here don't have the buying power but if they could even manage 20% higher price I would support the locals. Crikey, they could buy in their stock in bulk from them, bung the 20% on and I'd buy local but they won't have it. Everything is so expensive here.

BES can be a double edged sword, great for purchasers but a minefield for merchants. BES negotiate
huge discounts with suppliers large and small. This can lead to identical products being left on the
merchants shelves because they more expensive. When we negotiate prices of our products we offer our products to all at the same price...what margin they put on is up to them. I know of a product which is sold at a price which even the product owner cannot get it for from the manufacturer.
Price is ONE factor but often SUPPLY is more important esp if you want a part at 16.50 on a Friday
or a colleague eg who wants 780 boilers and 8x rads per boiler for January delivery.

Hello chaps. Hope you all had a good Christmas.

Just found out the hot is gravity.

Obviously for a shower mains cold and gravity hot is no good. Having said that though I lived for 5 years in a flat with a shower piped like that and managed to get it down to fine art. So it is possible.

But since this is for a dog...i.e. he is already showering under mains cold.... and since they just don't want to freeze the little devil, is there an option here?

PRV on the cold?

I don't want to bodge and I don't want to take a punt that something will be usable. Wont a proper solution. But just given that this isn't for the lady of the house to lather herself up in luxury but rather to take the edge of the mains cold....any thoughts?

Thanks

Installed this the other day. Equalising valve worked a treat.

What I didnt realise is the pressure on the mains is normal until you switch on the hot. So it's sort of dual use which is nifty for hot and cold outside taps since you can use the high pressure solo cold for garden watering etc.
