Anyone had any luck getting their gas work portfolio done?

This seems to be a significant bump in my career, just can't seem to get the work experince to become gas qualified.

Dunno why they don't just do a sign off in a workshop (under a registered engineer) that you can pay for, it's ridiculous!

With respect, you are never going to get enough experience by working in workshop. Working in a real environment is the only real way to learn.

I've had a guy working with me who needed to do some installs to finish his portfolio. He 1st hooked up with a guy who just did servicing and breakdowns. It was a real eye opener for him and he experienced things that he would never have come across in a workshop.

I inquired for a BPEC gas foundation course the other day, they told me the Work Portfolio can only be completed with 140 days gas experience under a regestered gas installer, is that true?

I've heard various time frames mentioned from no specific requirement to 3 months, but in every case the portfolio had to be signed off by an RGI.

I didnt have to complete a portfolio, just had to get a letter from my employer saying how long I had been employed for.

Just had a lightbulb pop up above my head.

Gonna scrap my subbying, start getting my own work and advertise as being able to do gas.

When I get a job that involves gas, I'll contract one of my Gas Safe Registered mates to do the install and then I'll learn what they're doing and fill in my portfolio.

Why didn't I think about that before?

So long as you dont advertise as being GSR i dont think it's against GSR policy(ie no logo, no mention of the resgister etc). I got asked about gas work all the time when i worked solely as a water plumber - it helped me get some evidence. I still get old customers from water jobs ringing me asking if i know a good gas engineer, now i say YEAH ME!
