Why do these in particular, c/p Megaflows et al, seem so prone to corrosion on flanges....and with the casing and insulation they all virtually impregnable so attempting to work on them is a nightmare......overhauls seem impossible......or perhaps its not corrossion but a sustained 'weeping' but nevertheless you still cannot readily get at the junction of cyl and flange....

By the way I'm not a plumber/engineer.......maintaining properties is my gig

thanks in anticipation of some thoughts

these cylinders have an electronic anode which normally doesn't get wired up and you cant repair these cylinders unless you have the required qualifacation

Can any experienced plumbers tell me what I need to do. I dont want to waste any money calling people out to do some trial and error. I have a direct electric Ariston 210 unvented cylinder with two heaters; 1 for the Economy 7 which on the upper part of the cylinder and the other a booster which is on the lower bit. My flat is electric only. This morning the tank has started to send all the hot water hot through the escape pipe leaving me with no hot water. I spoke to a plumber on here who reckons it is the thermostat of the economy seven heater and i have switched it off. He suggested I use the booster temporarily until he is able to come round and fit a new thermostat. I switched on the booster heater but after about 45 minutes the water starts to rush out through the escape pipe as well. I thought this wouldnt happen as the plumber strongly believed only the upper thermostat was faulty.

What do the experienced plumbers think the fault may be and what can I do?

In my judgement this is the HW being discharged by the Pressure Relief Valve......the short term solution is indeed to use the immersion heater which is working BUT to use it only for a short time to prevent the PRV being activated.....so 30 minutes will give you some HW...or you may even need a shorter period...and repeat from time to time....you cannot just leave it on

your e7 immersion should be connected to the lower immersion heater and your booster immersion is the upper immersion heater or you wont make any cost savings if they are set up as you said, check and get a sparky in if they are set up wrong.
check your plumbers unvented ticket as well before he touches your cylinder or he wont have insurance cover to do the work, as well as not be quaified to do the work!! as ever always thinking the worst
