Twice now in the last month I've turned up to do a job and no one has answered the door after numerous loud knocks so I've left, (after waiting ten minutes) only to find later that they were in and just didn't hear me.

Had one this afternoon and they just rang back now saying they got my note but they were in all along. I was sure they had forgotten, regular customer, no car outside and I even rang up but it was 'busy' I assumed the phone was off the hook.

I mean there's only so long you can walk around the house peering through windows and knocking before you give it up as a bad job?

i post a note, usually a scrap piece of paper or a bit of a brochure from a rep saying i called round

this is of course after progressively knocking louder and looking through windows as well as calling them

I had one where the door wasn't answered.

Returned another time and "customer" - tenant - was in.

Said I'd called on the agreed day.

"We were in all the time!"

Me: "So why didn't you answer the telephone when I rang it from outside your door?"

I agree, tennents are never in. The other time was about 4 weeks ago when I turned up to do a 4 day job and no one answered the door, I nearly banged it off its hinges, front and side door. I then sat in my van for about an hour outside while I took care of some paperwork and made some calls, then retuned to my banging. I went back to the van and wrote a note and as I was posting it the door opened and we both just stared at each other in disbelief!

He had dozed off in the lounge.

I normally knock on the door, bang on the door, phone then leave a note. The note being an invoice for a wasted trip.

i get this on a gas service or boiler break down which is kind of why i wont bother doing this now as just cant make them pay as loose so much time. Its not as if i'm any good at boiler breakdowns either so when i do try i just seem to loose hand over fist with custs not being in when get part etc.

You'd look a little silly if they took the piece of paper from you or from the other side of the letter box as you were slotting it through ...
