Can anyone tell me why the outer diameter of old fashioned ordinary rubber tap washers do not match the size stated?

For instance I have some 3/8" washers which actually measure 5/8" (outer diameter) although "3/8" is imprinted on one side of the washer. also some 1/2" washers the same which have an outer diameter of 3/4".

Also, whilst I am at it can someone put me completely out of my misery and tell me which way up delta washers fit, and possibly how they came about?

kind regards,
boydell😀

Come on lads don't be shy!

I have had excellent help in the past on this forum regarding my combi boiler, but no one seems to want to help an old fool with a simple question about his leaky washer.

What it is, I have 12 year old 1/2 inch mixer taps which have bog standard black rubber washers with "3/8" imprinted on them, but measure 5/8" in diameter.

I am not a plumber and am understandably confused! I have searched all over the internet as to why this is, but no one seems to want to provide an answer. I know I can take my old washer with me to the plumbers merchants, but I just wondered how this situation came about... it could confuse a stupid person!

kind regards,
boydell.
