Hi all
had gas board to do service on back boiler and fire,he said there is a hole in flue ,so cut off all my heating,had a look at the hole carnt find one when looked at the flue it had cement round the flue were it goes in boiler and some cement come away showin were the flu dosent meet the boiler, its been put in skewiff,gas board said you need a new flue or new combi boiler,why , the boiler been in 10 years so why not put somemore cement round the flue and boiler like it has been for ten years,ive had my boiler and fire with british gas homecare for ten years so why have they not seen the problem with the flue and cement round it,there no bracet round the flue were meets the boiler its just been shoved in as best it can,it cost me £400 to have it fitted 10 years ago with corgi reg engineer.

he is quite right if flue is damaged to cap off the appliance
whether its cheaper to repair the flue or replace the boiler only someone on site can say
paperwork should state where the hole in the flue is as he should have done a flue flow test and identified where the smoke was leaking from

no smoke test, just some cement come away to show were the flue dosnt meet the boiler and were it goes in skewiff .

Get a secont opinion, most joints between flue liner & back boiler were made with rope & fire cement so can't see why I cant just be remade or was the BG guy on commision to sell you a new boiler?

I have heard that before about commision.my mate said get a bag sand cement and fill hole in ring gas board and tell them to put your gas back on job done cost £5.00 not 2500

If hes there to service a boiler and finds an ID fault, I would expect him to advise on cost of repair so you can allow him to get the boiler safe and working again, much as your garage does with a car.

I wouldnt pay them until you have either got the boiler working again or decided to replace it and get in an independant engineer to quote against the bg price

You need a tub of fire cement not sand & cement as need to comply with regs which fire cement does.

gas fitter did not give price he said new flue, but adviced to get a combi boiler fitted and someone will be out in 20 hours or so,rang 5 times still not come out then they said next appointment 26 feb and said BG customer homecare are seen first well i am, they rip you off and treat you like dog poo.

lesson learnt. put you monthly subscription to bg in a savings account, cancel your contract and get in an independant plumber/engineer to advise you what is required. Dont try repairs to flues yourself as if you cock up someone can easily die from the pocs

Yes they get comision for every new boiler they sell by cutting off old.

Terrible bloody company can't stand the way they work.

As most said get someone in to repair and check flue, then supply can be reconnected. Cancel contract explaining your reasons, but only to a manager and then send it in writing.

To late i pay up front for my homecare £257, i used to have homserve but they were a bit better than BG, is there any bodyelse what does homecare which i can switch to,wornt be using BG again nor recommend them.

ask for your money back (or proportion owing) and threaten small claims court action in writing as they havent complied with their contractual obligations, dont give up, talk to trading standards

Hi guys
got a tub of fire cement £5.00, filled gap in ,phoned BG to put my boiler and fire back on ,comming after 1 pm,let you know how i get on.

Well what a waste of time using that heat cement,engineer rang me and said who fixed it, his mate said the flue was not fitted right,i said ive had heat cement put round it like it was before and the last 10 years, was he corgi registered he said well he should of taged it and put the fire back together,he said you should of got a quote of bg to fixs it,well they should of come out within 24 hours well nobody came here and ive had no hot water and heating for a week,he said get the guy who fitted it and get him to come out, that was 10 years ago so were do i stand there,I WOULDENT TOUCH BRITISH GAS WITH A BARGE POLE,They wornt be getting my hard earn cash again,they were no help whatsoever all they wanted me to do was spend £4000 for a new combi boiler, at least dick turpin had the decency to wear a mask.
