im fitting a basin with pedastal and can't get the pedastal to line up with the bottom of the basin, is this a regular problem? is the pedastal just decorative or is it supposed to take the weight of the basin?

realy depend how the basin is fixed as to wether its taking any wieght if basin is fischer bolted then no if its just got two scres then its the pedistal that takes the wieght
often its the wall/ floor thats not square can cause this right way to do it is to make up the gap using white cement
in practice its normally small wedges under the pedestal base and the dreaded silicon
some dont sit right even when stood free standing

Bang some plumbers mait on top of the pedestall , yeah it is a common problem.

Apparently somebody told me years ago that sanitary ware is made in molds that often warp after repeated use. They recommended "eying" in WC pans, not putting a level on them.

My own experience tells me that is part right.

But wait till you get a slab urinal to install.

Yes you are right Bernie, simple things like a wash hand basin are made in plaster of paris moulds, liquid clay "slip" is poured into the mould cavity, the plaster of paris mould will draw of some of the water in the clay slip, and after a time the excess clay slip will be poured off, leaving a raw clay basin which is then fired in a kiln
W/C's are made in sets of moulds and the different pieces to make up the pan are then hand assembled and jointed together then fired

Urinal slabs should be assembled and trimmed at works, to ensure that they fit together with the right fall in the channel etc, then when jointed together on site, they should be braced then grouted in solid, or that's the way we used to do them, they will never move :D

we always put a sack with a couple of the days papers in and a few coins as most slab urinals are gonna be there a good few years and its nice to think some ones going to find them in the future
ive fitted loads of these but none in the last 20 years its all partions and hanging bowls now
last one i did was in a gentlemans club in st james st which had glass panels at the bottom so they didnt splash their shoes

Classiest urinals I saw/used were in Brocket Hall (Hertfordshire) where they had fish tanks in front of the high level cisterns.
