Hello people,

My current bath is old and cracked and desperately needs replacing. I have done pipe work so have no problem removing and re-fixing the taps and waste pipes but im just wondering about fitting a new one. What is the best way to remove one? which bits do i need to remove first and how to i remove the sealant holding it to the wall. Also is there a standard bath size or are all baths different sizes as i have a limited space. Finally what is the best sealant to use o refit the new bath to the wall. i have been told many different types and am just confused now.

Tanks for any help you can give me.

hello granham30,
There is not much science needed to remove the old bath, make sure you measure the old bath so that the new one is the same.
Once you have diconnected all the pipework remove the wooden frame if there is one and lift the bath so that it gets loose. dont worry too much about the silicone it will get ripped off once you lift the bath or if there is too much silicone the take a stanley knife and cut it.
You probably need 2 people to remove the bath from the bath room. If it becomes difficult take a angle grinder and cut it into more managable sizes.
I hope this helps.

Hi, If its cast iron take a club hammer to it, quarter it in position (mind your eyes) it becomes manageable then. As for sealing it depends if you are tiling or jacking up to meet existing tile line?

hi graham, whats the bath made of, and is there a row of tiles on top??

there is a row of tiles on top, but im not sure what it is made of. sorry

Some of the old tricksters said to lower the legs of the bath before you take it out. It avoids disturbing the tiles so much.

Tried it a few times, it worked.

ive played bernies game, lower legs, "slide" bath out, put in new, plenty of pinknails and silicine, raise legs.
works well with acrylic, fibre glass..
cast iron baths.. justlead quoted quarter it. he is right, but cover everything it will splinter, and the splinters are like flying specks of glass! ppe. tho it is the only way to remove a comfortable weight.
