I posted this question yesterday but it got closed because I wasn't registered:

Problem number 1:
I've moved into a new house and when you turn the cold water on the bath mixer tap it cuts off the hot water. You can have either burning hot water or freezing cold it will not mix. The hot water comes from an immersion heater tank in the bathroom. What should I do to solve this problem?

Could either be the tap or the tank. If the tap it has separate mixer and if the tank. It's just not giving enough gravity feed. How are the hot and cold at the sink outlets.. vary slow? Or ok??? Does it take long time to fill the bath??

The pressure on the mixer bath tap is good for hot but the cold is much stronger. The hot tap is boiling hot like its coming out of a kettle. The bath mixer tap has a shower hose attached to the fitting (not off the actual tap) although we cant use it as its either scalding hot or freezing cold.It doesn't take long to fill a bath, but you have to run hot for 3 minutes, then run cold for 3 minutes, etc to get a suitable temperature.

The hot and cold pressure are fine on the sink taps, but they are seperate hot and cold so not a problem.

I think this may answer your question about your immersion tripping out !!

Then the only thing I'm wondering is the mixer tap itself. Separate mixer chamber as to mixing in the tap body. There are a few different types and on a gravity type like the one you have sounds like a bath mixer tap which "doesn't" mix in the tap body before the outlet.. eg. victorian bath mixers

Isn't the newness it's what the tap can deliver at the outlet at minimal gravitational heights, and again the type of flow rate which again means the type of hot and cold water supply to what type of mixer tap ..

so what should I do? Change the tap fitting? turn down the thermostat?

I would change the mixer tap. Ten years is quite old for a tap that probably had a maximum of 5 year warranty when it was new.
And also turn the immersion down a touch and keep an eye on it.

Does this mixer tap have a gauze like thing at the outlet.. why not attach a picture??I'm only thinking the issue with the bath tap mixer !! Separate mixer in tap body. If the make of tap is found "Google it". Check manufacturer information

Emersion should be set@60 degs lower than may cause the build up of bacteria I can't spell it!!!

Legionnaires

The tap probably has tank hot & mains cold causing the cold to overpower the hot... Not good plumbing practise, a new Tap would do the same.

Your hot water would not cause the rcd to trip the immersion, it may tho pop the built in overheat stat under the cover of the immersion... But if its tripping its probably burnt out anyway & needs replacing!
