i have a pair of bath taps which are still under a five year warrenty , but i would like to try and repair the hot water one , which is not opening properly and water is not been allowed in . i have not inspected the tap fully but i have noticed that the clip is in place , any ideas on a fix please

If it is the standard type of tap with a washer ( not quarter turn type) then first, obviously check the washer hasn't jammed. Most modern taps it is usually the hot that does this first. Turn water off & take works out. If not washer, remove clip at spindle, then pull or gently tap works apart. Screw spindle out, - u now should have it in 3 parts. Bottom part ( bit with washer attached) usually has 1 'o' ring, which may be worn. Clean & silicone grease all & if u could change ' o' ring to exact size,( hard 2 get!) do so. Reassemble & it will work. Trust me! Hope it's just an easy washer change though!

If they're still under warranty why can't you contact the company you bought them from and get them fixed at their time and expense? After all, some of the money you paid was towards that warranty.

problem I have with warranty is that you have to undo and take back, hoping they have in stock and then come back and refit, if its a simple fix then easier to do yourself.

usually do this with electrical items i.e.

problem is I usually break it and end up not being able to take it back as there is a user fault rather then a product fault.

Moral of the story, take it back get a replacement.

depens on type, picture please, could blockage or washer stuck as above. could be handle is loose and not turning as it should
this is the tap in question

take white bit off, undo screw and pull head off, undo cover, then undo head gear, washer will be in there, change washer, reseat, with reseating tool if needed, put back together

make sure to turn water off first.

Not sure if it is just a tap washer. Sure, a tap washer especially on hot tap could be stuck down & maybe that's all it is, but I ask any experienced plumber this question:- You go to fix a modern standard tap that has no flow ( or limited flow). You unscrew works and find washer is ok & clip is correctly on spindle. The works are faulty. ( a very common problem) What is wrong? See my first post.

If the handle doesn't turn as much as the cold tap, which is usually the case, either a new "O" ring or a good greasing should fix the problem.

Glad someone agrees with me! Usually hard to get correct ' o' ring as needs to be exact size but a little silicone grease (or Vaseline) is essential & gets tap working. ' o ' ring can look ok but flat. If it is badly damaged, however, tap will give trouble. New works can be hard to match handle. Old basic taps with packing gland were simple design so none of this bother. Some still made of that design & most outside taps are & u don't get problems with them, & except a tap washer!

Agree " Wheeto" , that vaseline shouldnt really be used on rubber rings, but just mentioning it as most people have some of it in their house rather than silicone grease & it does the job. Always afraid people would use ordinary grease! I carry a tub of silicone grease as has lots uses.

o rings arent rubber any more
Sorry, just my habit of calling them rubber 'o' rings! Never heard anyone (trade or diy) asking anywhere for them by any other name than rubber though! Next time I need some from merchants I will def ask the guys at counter for "Synthetic rubber" or " Silicone" or " Viton" rings. Probably get puzzled look!

"Rubber" can mean a multitude of materials. You will see things referred to as "silicone rubber" etc.

The old rubber was "Natural Rubber" which degrades the fastest.

The main rubbers you will find include EPDM, Nitrile, Butyl, PVC, Silicone and Neoprene. Silicone being the most stable. Most O rings are Nitrile rubber
