Anyone have any idea why Baxi insist on a non-return valve and expansion vessel on the cold feed to their Combi? No other manufacturer seems to. Backflow prevention is normally installed at point of use.

do u mean a mini expansion vessel used for anti hammer? if so Worcester like these fitted too if there is a water meter present. as for non return i am not sure.

No the installer instructions stated quite specifically that a non-return valve and expansion vessel was needed. I spoke to Baxi tech who said it was water regs, were very rude and slammed trhe phone down. So you have one guess as to whose boilers I won't be fitting again! I have been trying to get in touch with the water regs department at South West water to see what they have to say. Mostly because I would like to call that arrogant so and so at Baxi again and tell him he's wrong!

Well I picked a Worcester combi at random and they did not require backflow prevention. More to the point, I spoke with local water regs and backflow prevention (and hence an expansion vessel) are only required if the volume of hot water pipework exceeds 15 litres. That's a lot of pipe. They want to prevent the expansion of heated water to push that water back far enough for it to come out of the cold tap. Now THAT makes sense.
