Forgive my ignorance as I'm not a gas engineer but what is the purpose of a sump plug?

Cleans out debris from the condense trap on these early boilers they were a plastic unit as below, aluminium heat exchangers suffer from tiny particals of aluminium dissolved by the slightly acidic condense which build up over time and block the trap then the boiler fails .

That hex looks a beast! Aggressive ignition with those electrodes? Did you renew or clean them up?

They can be a bit aggressive but keeping em clean helps keep a check on the gas valve aswell they can pass , I just wire brush em and use a cleaning strip . Kop

Yeah. Had a customer who had the issue and it never did it whilst I was there. Took a bit of finding to get to the bottom of it - although I know now when someone says it's making a terrible noise it's the gas valve 😂

Yeah, the sensors go knackered so they don't adjust right and pump out >2000ppm. Lethal, Vaillant have got an issue on their hands with that boiler.
