I happened to sit my first CCN1 etc last week and there was a candidate who was currently a building surveyor. He had received one days in house training, on pipe bending, soldering, and pipe sizing. He then could sit his CCN1 assessment because the industry "UKAS" deemed it ok because he had "transferable skills". He passed, and is now a GAS SAFE engineer.
How the hell does he know what to do if a customer asks, how to change a plated heat exchanger for example or I've got a leak, on how to drain down, what controls to turn off.
I think it's utterly ridiculous the system is like this and that these candidates can be registered like this, or in such a short space of time.
