General question for those of you that are GSR.

Barring any hiccups I am going to be starting my ACS Training on 1st October. I have a few questions.

1. How much and which is the best FGA
2. How much and which is the best Gas 'U' Guage
3. How much and which is the best Core Drill and Core Set for flue holes?
4. Which courses would you recommend I took aswell as my ACS? ie certain manufacturer courses? CH Wiring Courses, Fault Finding courses etc.
5. How much is Gas Safe Registration, is Public Liability more expensive for gas work ( im assuming it is)?
6. Are there any extra tools I have missed out which you would recommend I should buy? If so how much roughly etc.
7. Is it easy to service a boiler? lol

Also anything you would like to add please really excited about finally getting it done so all help/guidance/info and words of warning greatly appreciated as always. Cheers Lads

General question for those of you that are GSR.

Barring any hiccups I am going to be starting my ACS Training on 1st October. I have a few questions.

1. How much and which is the best FGA It varies, I like Kane but also have an Anton Sprint
2. How much and which is the best Gas 'U' Guage I like my Regin Premier gauge but I sometimes use my Kane analyser when doing a TT.
3. How much and which is the best Core Drill and Core Set for flue holes? Marcrist DD2 or DD3 core drill, theres a thread on here about them.
4. Which courses would you recommend I took aswell as my ACS? ie certain manufacturer courses? CH Wiring Courses, Fault Finding courses etc. You can do manufacturers courses but it depends on what work you want to do and where you are. Different areas can have a mix of different makes of boilers. Get to know the electrics for Y and S plan systems, if you fit a lot of e.g. vaillants, do a vaillant course. Learn to use a multimeter and never trusted what a customer tells you as gospel.
5. How much is Gas Safe Registration, is Public Liability more expensive for gas work ( im assuming it is)? GSR is roughly £420 for the first year then about £21 a month by DD
6. Are there any extra tools I have missed out which you would recommend I should buy? If so how much roughly etc. a wet vac, a good multimeter, footpump good set of screwdrivers (electrical) and some stubby spanners, flue brush set.. you will probably get a lot more added to the list, we could all easily stuff a van full of tools!
7. Is it easy to service a boiler? lol You will pick it up, you cant be taught experience but experience teaches you a lot!

I've not put anything down about price as they can vary depending on where you buy your tools. Best advice I can give is stick with it and learn from the old guys. Never be scared to ask the question and never tell a customer exactly what is wrong with the boiler until they have paid you!

1 - put aside 6-700 quid for a kane or anton
2 - rothenburger 16-20 quid
3 - just get a branded one for 200 quid mark. Hilti is best but a lot more expensive. Marcrist cores
4-honeywell wiring. Mr combi faultfinding. Any manufractures course cos when approved you get to give extra warranty and can get work from their website. We've had a few from vaillant.
5-400 quid. Need 2 million pli
6- there's always more tools but you can do the job with what you got
7-some yes some no

One of the best tools your gonna have is your brain to take all the info in and then the second is your viper book to refer back to like a bible the first few weeks when your second guessing yourself

Small laptop / notebook to load all the manufacturers manuals you can find, it can be very handy when you come across a boiler you haven't worked on.

I sent number 2 son on a trawl of his favorite web sites for the Mr. Combi DVD he couldn't find it, we don't have many combis (or gas boilers) in my area so can't justify buying something I want just to see what's in it.

Best thing to do is see if you can tag along with a gsr. Offer to do some free or cheap labouring. I really don't recommend you go out and try to service or repair boilers without some hands on experience.

Thanks for all replies so far, much appreciated. Pete I've been thinking of getting an iPad for ages but don't know how to invoice on them. Is it easy?

Hopefully have already got that sorted mate. Long as he has enough work on and hopefully I can get some of me own work for him to do so I can tag along. He actually installed a boiler for me few weeks back
